The New England Patriots will turn over primary defensive play-calling duties to Brian Flores.

The Patriots lost defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to the Lions this offseason.

The elevation of Flores where he calls plays but it not officially defensive coordinator mirrors the move the Patriots made in 2010 with Patricia after the departure of Dean Pees. Patricia became defensive coordinator in 2012.

Flores had a head coaching interview this offseason with the Cardinals as his stock has risen.

Flores started his career as a Patriots scouting assistant in 2004 after playing linebacker at Boston College. He worked in New England’s personnel department until transitioning to the coaching staff in 2008.
