Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder and is "likely to have surgery" that would end his 2013 season.

Sanchez is waiting to make a final decision as he could opt to rehab the shoulder.

Sanchez, replying to a text message, told ESPN late Wednesday night: "If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left (Dr. James) Andrews' office. I would've stayed and got the surgery." Asked if he wanted to deny that he was likely to have surgery, Sanchez texted: "There's nothing to report. It's reckless."

Sanchez was injured while playing with 11 minutes left in a preseason game.

Woody Johnson hinted that Sanchez was partly to blame for the injury.

The New York Jets will continue to start Geno Smith at quarterback.
