The Detroit Lions have signed former Chicago Bears defensive back R.W. McQuarters to a one-year contract. The Bears released McQuarters on May 23. The Lions announced the signing June 22 but withheld other terms of the deal, reached earlier this month. In five seasons in Chicago, McQuarters had 295 tackles and nine interceptions. He switched from cornerback to safety last season and returned punts. The Bears acquired McQuarters in a 2000 trade with the San Francisco 49ers, who took him in the first round of the 1998 draft. He played his first two seasons under now-Lions coach Steve Mariucci.
