The first week of the season is always a dangerous time to begin a power rankings. With such a small sample size, there are far too many premature conclusions available that will ultimately mislead us from the eventual realities of a 16-game season. The Trench Counter formula, which the below rankings are solely based upon, creates a completely objective examination. The formula accounts for yards per carry, yards per pass, first downs, turnovers and penalties. It attempts to identify which team controls the line of scrimmage, controls the trenches. The true intention of this type of ranking system is to identify teams that may be over or underrated. 1. Baltimore Ravens: 19.4 While Joe Flacco finally had a great game against the Ravens and Ray Rice was incredible, credit must go to that Haloti Ngata-led defense. 2. San Diego Chargers: 16.8 The Chargers were able to overcome allowing special teams touchdowns, but that is where the Trench Counter gets thrown out the window. 3. Buffalo Bills: 13.3 Ryan Fitzpatrick walks away from Week 1 with a 133.0 passer rating, ahead of even the great weeks from Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. 4. Houston Texans: 13.2 Matt Schaub threw two interceptions on 24 attempts in Week 1, giving him an interception percentage of 8.3%. 5. Detroit Lions: 11.0 The Lions improved to 2-3 in games in which Calvin Johnson catches at least two touchdown passes. 6. Cincinnati Bengals: 10.7 Cedric Benson had a 4.9 yards per carry average in Week 1, something he only did twice last season. 7. New England Patriots: 7.4 The Patriots converted on 61.5% of their third down attempts against Miami, but allowed the Dolphins to convert on four out of five fourth down tries. 8. Washington Redskins: 5.5 Tim Hightower was given 28 touches in Week 1, which led the NFL. 9. San Francisco 49ers: 5.1 The 49ers were one of five teams to finish Week 1 with five sacks. 10. Jacksonville Jaguars: 4.8 Luke McCown's 91.5 passer rating is 15.2 points higher than his career average. 11. Philadelphia Eagles: 3.7 The Eagles led the NFL in yards per rush at 5.4 last season and had a 7.4 average in Week 1, which ranks them second behind Atlanta. 12. New York Jets: 2.3 The Jets had four players catch at least four balls for 60 or more yards. 13. Green Bay Packers: 1.7 The Packers recorded a first down on 37% of their carries, which makes Aaron Rodgers exponentially more dangerous with a running game teams must respect. 14. Carolina Panthers: 1.6 The Panthers gained 11.4 yards per pass attempt, but allowed Arizona to do likewise. 15. Chicago Bears: 1.4 The final score was more convincing than what the Trench Counter tells us, but the biggest concern may be the five sacks taken by Jay Cutler. 16. Denver Broncos: 0.3 Von Miller was excellent in his debut, forcing a fumble and generally being all over the field. 17. Oakland Raiders: -0.3 The defensive front of the Raiders was excellent against Denver, sacking Kyle Orton five times while holding the running game to a per carry average of 2.9 yards on 13 attempts. The Raiders are too potentially good to continue their undisciplined penalty-laden style. 18. Atlanta Falcons: -1.4 One-hundred yards on ten carries gave Michael Turner a tidy 10.0 yards per carry average, but his three catches for 40 yards was a career-high surprise. 19. Arizona Cardinals: -1.6 Early Doucet had 35 yards per reception in Week 1. 20. New Orleans Saints: -1.7 Darren Sproles had 250 all-purpose yards in Week 1. 21. Dallas Cowboys: -2.3 The Cowboys rushed 26 times for just 64 yards as the Jets' defense was able to control the line of scrimmage 22. St. Louis Rams: -3.7 Cadillac Williams filled in nicely for Steven Jackson with a 4.8 yards per carry average on 19 attempts. 23. Tennessee Titans: -4.8 Kenny Britt didn't quite reach his 225 yards from last season's Philadelphia game, but a 27.2 yards per reception average with two touchdowns is a nice season opener. 24. Seattle Seahawks: -5.1 The Seahawks held the 49ers to just 2.7 yards per carry and 12 first downs. 25. New York Giants: -5.5 The Giants didn't have a red zone reception in Week 1. 26. Miami Dolphins: -7.4 Reggie bush caught nine passes in his debut with the Dolphins. 27. Cleveland Browns: -10.7 Joe Haden had five passes defensed in Week 1. 28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: -11.0 The running game was nonexistent against Detroit's front-seven, as LeGarrette Blount and Earnest Graham combined for 28 yars on 11 carries. 29. Indianapolis Colts: -13.2 Delone Carter had a 3.6 average on seven carries. 30. Kansas City Chiefs: -13.3 Matt Cassel was in the 60s for his passer rating in Week 1, looking more like his 2009 version than the one that finished with a 93.0 mark in 2010. 31. Minnesota Vikings: -16.8 The passing game is deeply concerning, but Adrian Peterson rushed for 6.1 yards per carry. 32. Pittsburgh Steelers: -19.4 The Steelers were +17 on giveaways/takeaways in 2010, but have a -7 hole to dig themselves out from after Week 1.
