First-year Jets coach Eric Mangini has added two more assistants to his defensive staff, hiring former NFL linebacker Bryan Cox and University of Michigan defensive coordinator Jim Herrmann. Cox and Herrmann are expected to begin work Monday under the stewardship of Jets defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. Cox, 37, will serve as a defensive line assistant, while the 45-year-old Herrmann will coach the linebackers. The Jets have only sporadically released the names of the coaches recently hired and it is believed that Mangini, the former New England Patriots' defensive coordinator who supplanted Herman Edwards as head coach, will confirm the additions of his assistants when the staff is complete. Cox began working under Denny Marcin, who was retained from Edwards' staff. Cox primarily played linebacker for 12 years in the league, and with five different franchises, but his familiarity with the 3-4 front could be of considerable help if the Jets switch to that defense under Mangini.
