In all, NFL team owners gave $636,417 to GOP candidates for federal office, party committees, and federally focused "527" tax-exempt organizations during the 2008 election cycle. That amount is almost double the amount owners gave to Democrats. The GOP's biggest gridiron benefactor: the New York Jets' Woody Johnson, who spread $153,000 around to various Republican candidates and committees (including more than $70,000 to John McCain's presidential campaign). He was followed by the Houston Texans' Robert McNair, who chipped in $98,350; the Washington Redskins' Daniel Snyder gave $67,800; the Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones who donated $64,617, and the San Diego Chargers' Alex Spanos, who forked over $58,900. Roger Goodell, the son of the late Republican U.S. Senator Charles Goodell and himself a donor to the McCain campaign.
