Rookie quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez both began their NFL careers as starters on Sunday. Sanchez, who was taken with the fifth pick in April's NFL Draft by the Jets, and Stafford, the first overall selection by the Lions, will forever be linked as members of the 2009 class. On Sunday, Sanchez gained an early advantage on Stafford, becoming the first to threw a touchdown pass in the NFL. The former USC Trojan hooked up with receiver Chansi Stuckey on a 30-yard scoring pass with 3:21 left in the second quarter of New York's opening game against Houston.
