Eagles placekicker David Akers joined U.S. players in a friendly two-sport showcase Wednesday morning, following the national team's second training session at the NovaCare Complex before its 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal against Panama on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. Akers kicked field goals with U.S. midfielder Stuart Holden, 23, and forward Santino Quaranta, 24, both of whom put footballs through the uprights with the three-time Pro Bowler and wore Akers' No. 2 jersey. "It's a lot harder than it looks to kick field goals," said Holden, who has two goals and an assist through the Gold Cup's first round. "It took me a couple tries to get one from 50 yards, but I stuck it through the pipes, so I'm happy with that." The three then switched sports so Holden and Quaranta could shoot while Akers played goalie before the Birds' kicker ripped some penalty kicks of his own. "What a blast to come out with the national team and just throw back what I used to do 17 years ago," Akers said later. "Of course, they're a lot better than I ever was." Akers played soccer (goalkeeper and left wing) through his junior year at Tates Creek High in Lexington, Ky., and said he could have played in college, but a football scholarship was worth more.
