The Jaguars released Fred Taylor on Monday, giving sole possession of the starting job to running back Maurice Jones-Drew.
Coach Jack Del Rio has said that Greg Jones will get some touches each game, and Jacksonville could lock Jones-Drew up to a lucrative, long-term deal.
"He's certainly a player we want here in the future," general manager Gene Smith said. "He's obviously a younger Fred Taylor."
Jones-Drew is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due to make the league minimum for four-year players of $535,000.
RealGM Note: Jones-Drew was ranked fifth in season FIC amongst running backs in 2008 and 'deserved' a cap number of $6.04M, giving him a Reina Value of +780%.
