After the first weekend of college football, the top-10 consists of Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, Boise State, Florida State, Stanford, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and Nebraska. With their win over Oregon, LSU jumped ahead to No. 2. The Bob StoopsBerry Tramel of the Oklahoman: "In games decided by eight points or less, the nation’s longest winning streak is Auburn’s, at nine. The Tigers survived Utah State 42-38 Saturday. Next on the list is Oklahoma, at seven. Think about that. It wasn’t that long ago that we were questioning Bob Stoops’ performance in close games. But suddenly, the Sooners have won seven straight one-possession games: 23-20 over Nebraska in the Big 12 title game, 47-41 at Oklahoma State, 28-20 over Texas, 31-29 at Cincinnati, 27-24 over Air Force, 31-24 over Utah State and, in the 2009 season, 31-27 over Stanford in the Sun Bowl. OU’s most recent one-possession loss was 10-3 at Nebraska in 2009, when Landry Jones threw those five interception. Seems a long time ago." The Les MilesBilly Gomila of And The Valley Shook: "Of course we start with Jarrett Lee. It's really hard to say a 10 for 22, 98-yard and a touchdown performance a good one. The silver lining was the high number of drops, but the black cloud was the same hurried, "omigodwhyarethewallsclosinginonme" look we've seen before. The coaches did a good job of, frankly, taking the passing game out of the equation and leaning as heavy on the run as possible. Sure, the drops went a long way towards killing those passing numbers, but Lee was late on a few passes over the middle (a cardinal sin that cannot be repeated) and generally still gets skittish in the pocket when he has to come off of his primary receiver. The recipe still has to be quick reads that allow him to get the ball out quickly." The Nick SabanDon Kausler Jr. of the Tuscaloosa Bureau: "Alabama coach Nick Saban did not seem pleased with the young wide receivers who played against Kent State.. Somehow, Alabama gained 299 yards passing in its season-opening 48-7 victory over Kent State, but 118 yards came from senior Marquis Maze, who caught eight passes, and 92 yards came from running backs Eddie Lacy(76) and Trent Richardson (16). The others combined for 10 catches for 89 yards. Redshirt freshman wide receiver DeAndrew White was praised by Saban and teammates throughout the preseason. He made his Alabama debut and caught four passes for 44 yards." The Chris PetersenChadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman" Sports Illustrated is going with two regional covers this week — and one features Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore. The other cover features LSU. The Boise State headline is, It’s Go Time: Boise State is BCS Busting (Again). Boise State was on the cover twice last year — a regional college football preview cover featured the stars of the defense and a cover during the season showed the Broncos running onto the field. The Jimbo FisherCorey Clark of NoleSports: "Jimbo Fisher was genuinely pleased with EJ Manuel's performance in the season-opener. Manuel himself thought he played "pretty good" overall. But the 2010 Gator Bowl MVP is not looking to just be pretty good, which is why he's so hard on himself on the field and in the film room.. Manuel finished the day 22 of 34 for 252 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also had two touchdown passes dropped and another — to Bert Reed in the end zone — in which Fisher said Manuel made a perfect throw but the senior wide receiver was ruled to have come down out of bounds." The David ShawHank of Go Mighty Card: "If you didn't get a chance to watch the game and only saw the score, you probably assumed the Stanford offense was clicking on all cylinders and effortlessly moved the ball up and down the field. It didn't quite happen like that.. In general, the offense played extremely conservatively throughout the game, so much so that I'm convinced it was by design. There's no need to put anything serious on tape at this point, and things will probably look just as vanilla next week at Duke. Luck only looked deep once on Saturday, but went elsewhere when his receiver was covered. The longest pass play on the day actually came from backup Brett Nottingham, who threw a thirty-nine yard touchdown pass to Fleener during mop-up time in the fourth quarter." The Mike ShermanDavid Ubben of ESPN: "Cyrus Gray took advantage of christine Michael's absence to become the league's top back entering 2011, but the Aggies' first touchdown in Week 1 went to the teammate he'd missed for the second half of last season. Gray was the workhorse in landmark victories over Oklahoma and Nebraska, each time telling reporters he felt like he was playing for both himself and Michael, who could only watch." The Bret BielemaBrian Bennett of ESPN: "Some people were already talking about Russell Wilson as a Heisman candidate after Thursday's showing against UNLV (10-of-13 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns, 62 yards rushing and a score). He suffers from the same problem as White and Ball, being part of a star-studded backfield that's helped immeasurably by a standout offensive line. But Wilson could get into this race if he continues to put up those kinds of numbers." The Mike GundyRoyal John of Cowboys Ride For Free: "Desmond Roland is going to be a stud. Who saw this coming? I was sure he was going to redshirt--and then I saw him play in the fourth quarter. This kid has vision and the ability to make cuts in a split second. Eight carries for sixty one yards. His most impressive carry had him facing a dead end in the backfield, improvising, switching directions and grabbing 10+ yards on what should have been an insignificant play." The Bo PeliniHusker Mike of Corn Nation: "Seeing Rex Burkhead take a pitch down the sideline in the first quarter brought back a lot of pleasant memories...but the fact he didn't score underscores my only criticism of Burkhead. He's a powerful, tough runner --- but not a game-breaker. Although we didn't see it on offense, Ameer Abdullah showed us that he IS a game-breaker on his punt returns. Only a P.J. Smith "own-goal" tackle kept Abdullah out of the end-zone. I think the backfield could be stacked at I-back, so frankly, I don't see a reason why Martinez needs to lead the team in carries. Some of the precision was really lacking Saturday. Burkhead nearly sacked Martinez on one play, and Braylon Heard made one option pitch an adventure by being out of position. And was that a fullback trap to open the game?"
