The New York Giants have won two Super Bowls over the past five seasons, giving Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning a tremendous level of success. Interestingly, the Giants had better regular seasons in some of the seasons they didn’t even make the playoffs.

RealGM has been using a statistic called the Trench Counter to rank NFL teams since the 2007 season.

The Trench Counter accounts for average yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards, first downs and turnovers to determine how well teams control the game in the most meaningful ways.

The Giants rank 7th in Trench Counter from the 2007 season through 2011.

Below are their season-by-season rankings, Trench Counter totals and actual record in parentheses.

2007: 15th, +0.8 (10-6)
2008: 3rd, +6.2 (12-4)
2009: 19th, -0.2 (8-8)
2010: 3rd, +5.6 (10-6)
2011: 11th, +2.0 (9-7)
