It wasn?t just the cold, rainy weather that Washington was up against, but a questionable tuck-rule call, and a 52-yard field goal reversed because of a false start on the snapper, were just what the Champ-less Broncos needed to squeak out the 21-19 win. The tuck-rule which helped New England quarterback Tom Brady overcome the Oakland Raiders just a few years ago to get them to the Super bowl is back, except this time I care because it took away an apparent two points that the Redskins needed. Not only did it take those two points off the board it also took away our morale. It?s like the AFC referees knew that was going to be the turning points that were going to guide the Skins to a 4-0 record. Washington coach Joe Gibbs was very displeased with the call and stated at Monday?s afternoon press conference at Redskins Park ? When the quarterback goes and tucks the ball in from an attempted pass, he has to do something beyond that before it becomes a fumble. But here?s our point: We didn?t have anything to do with it. He did it strictly on his own. He started forward with the ball, pulled the ball back in, and it hits his left hand. Then it comes back out, in back of him in essence. So the point is, at what point is that a lateral backwards?? I lay in bed for an entire day telling myself that I was not going to watch any highlights or anything that even resembled football. I was deeply feeling the remnants of a Monday morning loss. It was a feeling that I have not felt in a while and thought that it would be at least another three weeks before I would be reaching for the ?Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul Redskins edition? book just to get out of bed. That?s when I gathered the strength to get up and see if anyone else was feeling the same way I did. And then I found this quote by Gibbs referring back to the tuck-rule that reads ?But, hey look, up here you?ve got to be able to overcome that. You can?t spend a lot of time with it. We?ll turn all of that stuff into the league and try to help them.? At that very moment I started to remember the positive things that came out of this game like that Clinton Portis reached 103 yards on just 20 carries and that Mark Brunell connected with eight different receivers to finish his day 30-for-53 for 322 yards and 2 touchdowns while throwing no picks. Many of the so-called experts thought that the Redskins didn?t have much of a chance to go into Denver and even compete. The defense was not exactly stellar but they were only one big play away from completing a win, which we saw has enough proof to argue over. Denver quarterback Jake Plummer is a pretty mobile athlete in the pocket but he couldn?t beat us with his arm or his legs as he was stuffed for 17 yards on 4 carries, and only managed to throw for 92 yards. Running back Tatum Bell proved to be the real Redskins killer as he rushed for 127 yards on just 12 carries, one of which was a 55 yard scamper that put Denver up 21-10 in the third quarter. That drive has made it two weeks in a row that the Skins defense has come out of the locker room looking completely lost and given up a touchdown. That really has to become a bit of concern for the coaching staff. Maybe that will be enough reason to get star linebacker LaVar Arrington off the bench and on the field next week. I know that in all of our little fantasy worlds, the Redskins were supposed to go undefeated and now that fantasy world has become, well, a fantasy. But just because one little loss doesn?t mean that we can?t stop dreaming of the super bowl. In all honesty who is really dreaming? It?s more like believing. I have said it since the pre-season and now it?s going to once again take all of us to say it together, ?This is the year. I just know it!!!!!!? Washington offensive game ball goes to: H-back Chris Cooley who caught 8 passes for 82 yards and the touchdown at the end to put the Skins in contention for the win. Washington defensive game ball goes to: Arrington who although, did not play one down still managed to support his teammates in what is definitely the toughest time in his career. Your time is going to come Arrington, just hang in there. Injury Update on cornerback Shawn Springs bruised shin is said to not be serious but his status for next week is uncertain.
