Points were a little more difficult to come by in Week 2, as half more than half the NFL is now 1-1. Detroit Lions 48, Kansas Chiefs 3 Trench Counter: Lions +23.3 Matthew Stafford proved Week 1 was no fluke, throwing four touchdowns and 294 total yards passing on 39 attempts. The Chiefs proved their Week 2 performance wasn't a fluke either, as they are now losing the season points total by a 89-10 margin. They are officially in the Andrew Luck derby now that they can add Jamaal Charles to Eric Berry on the shelf. Buffalo Bills 38, Oakland Raiders 35 Trench Counter: Bills +12.8 Penalties weren't an issue for the Raiders in a first half that saw them go up 21-3, but they came out of the shadows in a second half in which they allowed 35 points. The defensive front that looked so impressive against Denver managed to be shutout in the sack department against Ryan Fitzpatrick. Denarius Moore had a bust-out performance, catching five balls for 146 yards and a touchdown as he filled in for Oakland's banged up receiving corps. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24, Minnesota Vikings 20 Trench Counter: Vikings +1.4 The Vikings were up 10 points more than halfway through the fourth quarter, but gave up two lost touchdowns to lose their home opener and fall two games behind two NFC North rivals. Both teams were able to move the ball on the ground effectively, rushing for approximately 5.5 yards per carry. New Orleans Saints 30, Chicago Bears 13 Trench Counter: Saints +3.8 Jay Cutler was unable to get anything downfield and the 117 yards receiving from Matt Forte in Week 2 after a Week 1 in which he had 90 is a strong indicator of those problems. Mark Ingram rushed for a tepid 3.6 yards per carry on 14 attempts, plus a lost fumble. Tennessee Titans 26, Baltimore Ravens 13 Trench Counter: Titans +10.8 The Joe Flacco riddled with question marks returned in a road game against the Titans, finishing the game with a 51.2 passer rating and less than 50% completion rate. Ray Rice was Baltimore's leading receiver with five catches for 53 yards (eight targets overall). For the Titans, Mike Munchak gets his first win and that makes us remember Jack Pardee and the 1-9 1994 Oilers when Steve Fisher first took over. Chris Johnson was human again with a 2.2 average on 24 carries, but Kenny Britt continues to dominate opposing secondaries. Britt finished with 135 yards and one touchdown. Cleveland Browns 27, Indianapolis Colts 19 Trench Counter: Browns +0.2 The touchdown to Dallas Clark made the final score appear closer than it actually was, but the Trench Counter would have told us that anyways. The Browns had a per rush average of just 3.1, but were a defense-killing 8-for-16 on third down. New York Jets 32, Jacksonville Jaguars 3 Trench Counter: Jets +12.2 The Jets dominated this game from start to finish and Mark Sanchez's two interceptions proved meaningless in comparison to the four they forced on Luke McCown. Blaine Gabbert was 5-for-6 in his garbage time NFL debut. In a closer game, the 3.1 yards per carry from Shonn Greene would be more disconcerting. Pittsburgh Steelers 24, Seattle Seahawks 0 Trench Counter: Steelers +21.5 Pittsburgh fortunately was able to recover and fatten up following Week 1 against Seattle, pitching a shutout where the defense had the whole field behind them virtually the entire game. For the offense, Ben Roethlisberger connected with Mike Wallace eight times and was sacked just twice. Washington Redskins 22, Arizona Cardinals 21 Trench Counter: Redskins +9.4 The Redskins scored nine points with under six minutes remaining in the game to comeback against the Cardinals. Tim Hightower had a 4.8 yards per carry average against his former team, while seven of Kevin Kolb's nine targets of Larry Fitzgerald hit the mark, including one for 73 that looked like the potential game-winner at the time. Green Bay Packers 30, Carolina Panthers 23 Trench Counter: Packers +8.8 Teams like the Packers beat teams like the Panthers, so the story of the game is the 432 yards in the air and additional 53 on the ground from Cam Newton. Steve Smith is halfway to his 2010 total in receiving yards, with 156 this week. For the Packers, James Starks continues to create separation in his running back battle. Starks averaged 9.4 yards per carry while Ryan Grant had an average of 4.2. Dallas Cowboys 27, San Francisco 49ers 24 Trench Counter: Cowboys: +1.3 Dallas persevered to withstand a 0-14 deficit and a mid-game injury to Tony Romo to win in overtime. The two turnovers by the Cowboys fell on Jon Kitna's watch as Tony Romo had a 116.4 rating with two touchdowns and no interceptions. New England Patriots 35, San Diego Chargers 21 Trench Counter: Patriots +7.3 As expected, Tom Brady and Philip Rivers each attempted 40 passes and combined for just over 800 yards. The difference was largely New England's ability to completely takeaway Antonio Gates, while Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez combined for three touchdowns and 148 yards. Houston Texans 23, Miami Dolphins 13 Trench Counter: Texans +0.5 The Texans and Dolphins combined for five field goals and three touchdowns, with Dan Carpenter missing two of his attempts. Chad Henne and Daniel Thomas chipped in two turnovers for Miami. Ben Tate received 23 of Houston's 36 carries while averaging 4.5 yards. Arian Foster rushed 10 times for 33 yards. Denver Broncos 24, Cincinnati Bengals 22 Trench Counter: Bengals +3.3 The Bengals virtually matched the Broncos yard for yard in both the passing and running game, along with total first downs, but while Marvin Lewis' team was +2.0 in takeaways, they were 1-for-11 on third downs. Eric Decker averaged 22.6 yards on his five catches, two of which were for touchdowns. Atlanta Falcons 35, Philadelphia Eagles 31 Trench Counter: Falcons -8.8 The Eagles were +7 on first downs, +2.1 in yards per pass and just -0.4 on yards per rush while committing fewer penalties , but still managed to lose a game where Michael Vick hurt his neck. Matt Ryan picked his spots and threw for four touchdowns against two interceptions, but it was largely the running game setting up the pass down the stretch. Michael Turner's big 61 yard run setup the winning touchdown, but a 3rd and four hit to Tony Gonzalez, followed by a Jacquizz Rodgers run to get near the end zone were every bit as big.
