Our NFL Team Rankings are based solely on the The Trench Counter, which is an objective formula measuring average yards per pass and run on both offense and defense, along with first downs registered and given up, turnovers for and against, and total penalty yards.

Over time, The Trench Counter rankings begin to closely resemble the standings but goes even further to determine which teams are truly the best when on the line of scrimmage.

We are also including the Bill Parcells/Michael Lombardi stat that we modified called Total Rushes/Completions, which is listed as the second set of rankings below.

The chief aim of the Trench Counter is to take the subjective out of the equation and even the somewhat fluky nature of teams actually scoring points, which is of course the whole point on a game-by-game basis.

The Carolina Panthers continued to beat up on bad teams, moving up to No. 2 with their +17 Trench Counter performance on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks maintain the top slot though they have dropped below 10.0 for the first time this season.

But the Green Bay Packers have rebounded from some early season issues and injuries to ascend to third.

The Denver Broncos fell all the way to six with their deficit in the Trench Counter to the Indianapolis Colts, who are now the top ranked AFC team for the second time this season.

The San Francisco 49ers had another impressive victory and have moved into the top-10 with another Trench Counter-padding game in London this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the New York Giants' win over the Minnesota Vikings, the Jaguars have the clear inside track to finish 2013 ranked last in the Trench Counter.
