Zach Wilson appears to have a clear path to the starting job with the New York Jets, but he doesn't expect to be handed a freebie.

"In this position, the coaches want to play the best player. That position has to be earned," Wilson said Saturday. "I have to do what I'm supposed to do. That'll take care of itself."

The No. 2 overall pick said starting is "important" to him but not the priority. At BYU, Wilson was a backup for his first six games as a freshman before becoming the youngest starter in school history at 19 years, 2 months.

The only other quarterbacks on the roster are James Morgan, a 2020 fourth-round pick, and former practice squad player Mike White.
