Washington Football Team has released Alex Smith.

Smith turns 37 in May and is due to count $24.4 million against the salary cap. The move will save Washington $14.9 million against the cap, while Smith becomes a free agent.

After a gruesome leg injury, Washington kept him on the roster in part because he was too expensive to release.

Smith started six games in 2020. Washington went 5-1 in those starts.
