The San Francisco 49ers won't begin talks with Jimmy Garoppolo on a new contract until the offseason.

The 49ers can use the franchise tag on Garoppolo, which means there is a lack of urgency on their end.

"Obviously, we're very encouraged with how these two games have been," Kyle Shanahan said. "We'll see what happens here in the offseason when we get together and can assess everything. But I definitely don't think that's something he's thinking about at this point and it's definitely not something that I'm thinking about either."

Garoppolo completed 20 of 33 for 334 yards with a touchdown and interception in the 49ers' 26-16 victory in his second start.
