The Buffalo Bills have declined their fifth-year option on Sammy Watkins.

Sean McDermott explained the decision in a team statement.

“Sammy and I have had good conversations about this decision,” McDermott said. “There is no question that Sammy is a very good football player and has worked very hard during his rehab this offseason. We look forward to seeing a healthy Sammy Watkins on the field in 2017.”

The former first-round pick will enter 2017 in the last year of his rookie contract.

Watkins is currently not cleared to participate fully in the team’s offseason conditioning program and is not expected to participate in the OTA practice sessions coming up in a couple of weeks.
