Kirk Cousins and Washington are optimistic about their chances of agreeing upon a long-term deal.

Cousins signed the one-year franchise player tender in March that will him just under $20 million.

Washington would like to sign Cousins to a multi-year deal that would carry a lower cap figure.

The two sides have until July 15th to agree upon a long-term deal.

“It’s a big contract, and a position that’s very important to us, and he wants to be in the organization,” Scot McCloughan said on Monday before teeing off at Ryan Kerrigan’s annual golf tournament to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “We’re going to figure it out. If it’s not done by July 15, don’t worry. We’ll still get something figured out.”
