Having lost their last five games, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who raised the Lombardi trophy just ten months ago, are very much in danger of missing the postseason. It's considered almost commonplace for the loser of the Super Bowl to miss the playoffs or struggle at some point the following season, but the champion rarely stumbles so quickly and dramatically. At 6-7 entering Week 15, the Steelers are among three teams looking in on the AFC Wild Card race. The Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets, all at 7-6, have a huge leg up on Pittsburgh for the conference's two at-large bids. The last team to win the Super Bowl and miss the postseason the next year was, believe it or not, the Steelers, who won it all in 2005 and then sat out the big dance in 2006. Since the NFL instituted the Wild Card, back in 1978, just ten teams have failed to make the playoffs after winning the final game of the season. That's ten teams in 31 full seasons, meaning roughly 32% of Super Bowl winners fail to even get the chance to defend their title less than a year later. What's strange is that the Steelers are the only repeat offenders on the list, having missed the playoffs in both 1980 and 2006 after winning the Lombardi trophy the previous year. Here is the list of teams that have struggled just months after standing on top of the football world: Steelers (2006), Buccaneers (2003), Patriots (2002), Broncos (1999), Giants (1991), Redskins (1988), Giants (1987), 49ers (1982), Raiders (1981) and the Steelers (1980).
