The Patriots have released quarterback Kevin O'Connell in a surprise move, a source told ESPN's John Clayton. O'Connell, a third-round pick in 2008, was the leading candidate to backup Tom Brady after New England dealt Matt Cassel to Kansas City. The move is also surprising in the wake of reports that Brady may have injured his shoulder in the team's preseason game against the Redskins on Friday night. Andrew Walter and rookie Brian Hoyer are the only quarterback's remaining on New England's roster.
