In the sixth installment of a seven-part series, RealGM will help you prepare for your upcoming fantasy draft by ranking the best quarterbacks. This is the final ranking list before we unveil our Top 200 Big Board tomorrow, and in touchdown-heavy leagues drafting an elite quarterback is vital. Adding a proper field general to your roster isn?t easy, but there are a number of top-flight options available heading into the 2009 season. There are always extenuating circumstances, but Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and a host of others appear to be no-brainers. Weigh the risks (Brady?s knee) and rewards (the Saints? passing attack) and bolster your team with a golden arm. 1. Drew Brees, New Orleans He?s posted more than 4,400 yards and 26 touchdowns in each of the last three seasons with the Saints. Only two quarterbacks (Tom Brady and Kurt Warner) have reached those marks once over the same time period. 2. Tom Brady, New England We are putting a lot of faith in a guy with a reconstructed knee, but he?s that good and New England?s offense is that elite. 3. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis He isn?t as explosive as he once was, but he?s as stable as they come. There will be weeks where he single-handedly leads you to victory, but he won?t ever be the reason you lose. 4. Philip Rivers, San Diego Rivers had a breakout season in 2008, posting 4,009 yards and 34 touchdowns against just 11 interceptions. He attempted 478 passes, just 18 more than he did in 2006 and 2007, and led the NFL in yards per attempt. 5. Kurt Warner, Arizona It?s unlikely that Warner will make it through another 16-game season, but the Cardinals are still expected to air it out. He was just two pass attempts shy of 600 in 2008. 6. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay In his first full season as Green Bay?s quarterback, Rodgers excelled. He went 341-for-536 with 4,038 yards and 28 touchdowns. Defenses will key in on him if Ryan Grant doesn?t produce, but the talent is there. 7. Tony Romo, Dallas His success will depend heavily on how his receivers perform with Terrell Owens playing in Buffalo. He still has Jason Witten, which should keep him relevant regardless of how Roy Williams and Co. perform. 8. Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Always an injury concern, McNabb managed to play full season in 2008 (aside from the second half of Philadelphia?s controversial loss to Baltimore). With DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, he has plenty of tools to eclipse 4,000 yards and 20-plus touchdowns. 9. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati We?ll stay consistent here. If you read our wide receiver rankings, you know we think the Bengals have a shot to at least field a solid offense in 2009. He doesn?t have the potential to be a top-three quarterback anymore, but he could be a starter again. 10. Matt Schaub, Houston We hate to beat a dead horse, but Schaub will be a sure fire starter this season if he can remain upright. He has Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels to target, and a pass-heavy offense. 11. Matt Ryan, Atlanta If the Falcons didn?t have Michael Turner, Ryan would be a tad higher on this list. We don?t think he?ll suffer from a sophomore slump, but they simply won?t throw enough to make him an elite option. 12. Jay Cutler, Chicago He and Devin Hester need to spend the entire summer together. If they can develop good chemistry, both will become great fantasy starters in 2009. If not, Cutler will regress after posting 4,526 yards and 25 touchdowns last season. 13. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Remember Big Ben?s 2007 statistics? He had just 3,154 yards, but tallied 32 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. Heading into last season a lot of fantasy owners reached for Roethlisberger, who responded with just 17 TDs and 15 INTs in 2008. Tread carefully. 14. Matt Cassel, Kansas City The Chiefs just gave Cassel a sizable contract, which means Scott Pioli and Todd Haley must have a lot of confidence in the still somewhat unproven quarterback. Tony Gonzalez is gone, but Dwyane Bowe is extremely talented. 15. Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle We might be ranking a question mark a little high, but we are buying into what Hasselbeck is saying about his health. Don?t draft him as a starter, but he could be a very good backup. 16. Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants 17. Kyle Orton, Denver 18. Jason Campbell, Washington 19. David Garrard, Jacksonville 20. Trent Edwards, Buffalo 21. Jake Delhomme, Carolina 22. Sage Rosenfels, Minnesota You can slide Brett Favre into this slot as well. 23. Joe Flacco, Baltimore 24. Chad Pennington, Miami 25. Shaun Hill, San Francisco 26.
