David Garrard will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks.
The injury likely takes the veteran out of the running to win Miami's starting quarterback job. He was competing with Matt Moore and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill.
"Nothing happened. Just 'Father Time,' wear and tear," Garrard said. "They have to take out loose things floating around."
