The United National Gridiron League has announced that the Georgia Slashers will be its fourth of eight teams to begin play in the professional developmental football league's inaugural 2010 season. The Slashers, who will be based in the Columbus, GA area, will be joined by the Alabama Blackbirds (Birmingham), Miami Scorchers, Ohio Marauders (Akron/Cleveland) and teams soon to be announced in Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina and Virginia. "We are very excited to bring the UNGL to Georgia, one of the country's football hotbeds," stated Marvin Tomlin, UNGL co-founder. "As a developmental pro football league, we are confident the fans enjoy will the high level of competition where everything counts and players are playing for their futures," Tomlin added. The majority of the UNGL players will come from colleges throughout the country as well as from free agents with NFL potential. All participants must be at least 21 years old, and be no more than five years removed from the expiration of their college football playing eligibility. The UNGL will play by all NFL rules and referee standards. On Saturday, August 15, the UNGL will hold its first regional mini camp at the Sperling Sports Complex in DeLand, Florida. The UNGL mini-camps will perform the same testing program that is used by the NFL and other testing programs across the country. Each player will be tested on speed, power, agility, strength, athleticism and football ability via skills and drills per position. This mini-camp, however, will include contact drills such as one-on-one competition between offensive and defensive positions, situational competition (7 on 7), and redzone drills. The players rated as "Top Performers" at the mini-camps as determined by the UNGL scouting Department, will automatically qualify for placement in the free agent draft pool for the 2010 draft.
