The Indianapolis Colts made the playoffs in every season between 2002 and 2010 until Peyton Manning was lost for 2011 due to multiple neck surgeries.

Manning is now gone, as are the Polians. In their place are Andrew Luck and Ryan Grigson as the Colts are on track to quickly rebuild.

RealGM has been using a statistic called the Trench Counter to rank NFL teams since the 2007 season.

The Trench Counter accounts for average yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards, first downs and turnovers to determine how well teams control the game in the most meaningful ways.

The Colts rank 10th in Trench Counter from the 2007 season through 2011.

Below are the Colts’ season-by-season rankings, Trench Counter totals and actual record in parentheses.

2007: 1st, +10.7 (13-3)
2008: 14th, +1.8 (12-4)
2009: 4th, +5.9 (14-2)
2010: 13th, +0.6 (10-6)
2011: 30th, -6.3 (2-14)
