Washington To Start Kirk Cousins, Interested In Trading Robert Griffin

Sep 1, 2015 12:19 PM

Washington has named Kirk Cousins their Week 1 starter at quarterback.

The decision to start Cousins comes amid turmoil surrounding quarterback Robert Griffin III, who missed Saturday's preseason game because of concussion symptoms.

Some high ranking officials and coaches within the organization would like to trade Griffin, but are meeting resistance from ownership.

Washington has even discussed trading away Griffin.

Cousins completed 20 of 27 passes for 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception Saturday in Washington's 31-13 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Robert Griffin III Will Be Reevaluated In 1-2 Weeks

Aug 30, 2015 1:41 AM

Robert Griffin III has not been cleared by doctors to play in Washington's preseason game on Saturday.

Griffin suffered concussion-like symptoms in an Aug. 20 preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but practiced all week and was initially cleared by independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtzke.

However, the team reversed course Friday.

It was unclear even Thursday whether Griffin had indeed suffered a concussion.

Junior Galette Out For Season With Torn Achilles

Aug 26, 2015 8:34 PM

Junior Galette has suffered a torn Achilles and will be out for six to eight months.

Galette's injury happened at the end of Wednesday's practice.

Jay Gruden didn't confirm the Achilles tear but told reporters earlier Wednesday that Galette suffered a left ankle/foot injury.

"I'm very concerned," Gruden said.

Galette, 27, was released by the New Orleans Saints earlier this summer, less than a year after they signed him to an extension worth up to $41 million.

Washington Perhaps Prematurely Believes RGIII's Concussion Not Severe

Aug 21, 2015 11:53 AM

Robert Griffin III suffered a concussion in Thursday's preseason game.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Griffin's concussion is not believed to be severe. That judgment appears premature and optimistic considering Griffin has just begun the testing.

Washington's medical staff will continue to monitor Griffin for lingering symptoms and any setbacks.

Robert Griffin III Feels He's Best Quarterback In NFL

Aug 17, 2015 5:21 PM

Robert Griffin III remains highly confident in his abilities after two difficult seasons to follow-up his Rookie of the Year campaign.

"I feel like I'm the best quarterback in the league, and I have to go out and show that," Griffin said. "Any athlete at any level, if they concede to someone else, they're not a top competitor, they're not trying to be the best that they can be.

"There's guys in this league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that's what I work toward every single day."

In 2013, Griffin was returning from multiple torn ligaments in his knee but played the first 13 games before being removed from the lineup. Last season he dislocated his left ankle in Week 2 and missed six games.

Washington Won't Change Nickname For New Stadium

Aug 17, 2015 1:45 PM

Bruce Allen said Washington won't reconsider changing their nickname even if it's a barrier to a potential new stadium.

The franchise has begun the process of finding a new home.

Despite protests from Native Americans and others, Washington has maintained they won't change their longtime nickname. But Interior Secretary Sally Jewell opposes the team name, which could prove to be a hindrance if they want to return to Washington, D.C.

Niles Paul Out For 2015 With Fractured Ankle

Aug 14, 2015 10:52 AM

Washington has lost Niles Paul for the entire 2015 season with a fractured ankle.

Paul was set to be Washington's starting tight end, though Jordan Reed is their better receiving option. One of the most athletic "move" tight ends in the league, Reed has difference-making potential if he can stay healthy.

"A huge loss for us," Jay Gruden said. "He's a great player and a great leader."
