Ranking The NFL's Oldest, Youngest Starters By Team

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens have the three oldest collections of starters in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are the youngest.

Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant had a popular saying that "for every young guy you start, you lose a game."

Pete Carroll worked for Grant early in his coaching career, but has had one of the youngest teams in the NFL during his tenure with the Seahawks.

"I was of that mindset in classic fashion until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots and then it just flipped in me that we don't know where we're going unless we find these guys out," Carroll said. "One of the really exciting things about playing guys early is ... by the middle and to the end of the season, you’ve developed players that fit into your rotations now that add to your depth and also add to the opportunity to not over-play your older guys."

Below is a full list with the rank in offense/defense in parenthesis.

1. Atlanta Falcons (2/5)
2. San Diego Chargers (7/3)
3. Baltimore Ravens (1/15)
4. Chicago Bears (11/4)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (25/1)
6. New York Jets (23/2)
7. New York Giants (9/2)
8. Detroit Lions (3/20)
9. New Orleans Saints (6/13)
10. San Francisco 49ers (8/8)
11. Denver Broncos (14/7)

Helu Impressive As Redskins Head Into Season With Uncertainty At RB

Aug 2, 2014 1:52 AM

Mike Shanahan once again is expected to have a running back by committee approach.

Rookie Alfred Morris and second-year pros Evan Royster and Roy Helu Jr. are competing for carries in the Washington Redskins' backfield.

“Whoever’s going to be out there [as the starter], we still have to compete each week,” Helu said.

Helu had the best performance to end the preseason, rushing 15 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Helu also had two receptions for 34 yards.

“We have some solid backs on this team,” Royster said. “It’s definitely a good problem to have for a coach’s standpoint. But it’s tough on us. We just want to make this team as best we can.”

Rams Will Measure Success Of RG3 Trade By Their Own Players

Nov 27, 2014 6:08 AM

The St. Louis Rams made traded the second overall pick to the Washington Redskins in exchange for first rounders in 2012, 2013 and 2014, along with a second round pick.

Regardless of how Robert Griffin III performs in his NFL career, Rams' GM Les Snead is focused on how his own picks progress.

“The players you acquire during you reign, and how they produce, is what you are going to be measured by, not really one particular player another team picked,” he said. “I think our mantra here in this building is we are going to stack good decisions and I think as we stack good decisions, good things will happen for this organization.”

St. Louis selected Michael Brockers with the 14th overall pick.

Chris Cooley Cut By Redskins

Oct 31, 2014 2:19 PM

The Redskins have released Chris Cooley.

Cooley would like to continue his career, but admitted it would be difficult playing for a new team.

“I’ll take some time and make sure what I do in the future is exactly what I want to do,” Cooley said.

Fred Davis will start for the Redskins at tight end and the team is giving Cooley an opportunity to start elsewhere.

“I think he’s earned that right,” Mike Shanahan said.

Shanahan said the Redskins could re-sign Cooley if he is unable to find a job starting elsewhere.

Luck Puts 'Stuff That Matters' Ahead Of Marketing Opportunities

Dec 13, 2014 12:14 PM

As the first overall pick in April's NFL Draft, Andrew Luck had plenty of opportunities to market himself and make some extra money.

The Colts quarterback has passed on many offers, while Robert Griffin III is in a ton of advertisements, nationally and in the Washington, D.C. area.

"I really didn't have much time," Luck said. "And I wanted to make sure I had time to handle the stuff that mattered, whether it was moving into an apartment, finishing school or learning the playbook. There was so much going on, I figured the less time I spent promoting myself or doing ads, the better for me. I figured I'd wait and hopefully, at some point, a big fish will come along.'

"And really, to each his own. I don't necessarily think my way is the right way. It's what's best for each person. It's fun to see Robert capitalizing on his situation."
