Griffin III Signs Contract With Redskins

The Redskins signed Robert Griffin III early Wednesday morning. Griffin will get $21,119,098 fully guaranteed over four years and the contract has a team option for a fifth year. Griffin missed the first two days of rookie training camp that began on Monday. The Redskins got their rookies together well before the rest of the league for extra workouts and classroom sessions.

Fred Davis Must Wait For New Contract

He didn't receive a long-term contract before Monday's deadline, so Redskins tight end Fred Davis must now wait for some security. He will play this season under the one-year franchise tag at a salary of about $5.5 million. Davis was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the team used its franchise tag to retain his services. He signed that one-year tender in March.

Griffin is among fourteen first-round picks from the 2012 NFL Draft without a signed contract, therefore he is not required to report to the pre-camp workouts and should not be considered a "holdout" or "no show." Last week, Griffin had expressed a desire to have a deal in place before Monday.

Rookies are scheduled to report to the Redskins for conditioning and workouts on Monday, but a certain quarterback remains without a contract. Robert Griffin III hopes to have a deal signed by the time workouts begin. "I talked to my agent the other day, and he said they had been talking last week then took a break over the weekend, but from what I've heard I think it's gonna get done," Griffin said. "I think my agent and the Redskins both know it's paramount for me to be in camp on time, and I think they're going to work towards that."
