McNabb: Redskins A Bad Fit For RG3

Oct 31, 2014 6:33 AM

Donovan McNabb wonders whether Washington coach Mike Shanahan will be able to get the most out of Robert Griffin III if, as expected, the team drafts the Heisman Trophy winner. McNabb replied: "No. I say that because a lot of times ego gets too involved when it comes to being in Washington."

Scouts See Luck As Safer Pick Than Griffin

Jun 27, 2014 3:14 PM

The Colts are trying to add mystery to the first overall selection in next month's NFL Draft, but those around the league believe that Andrew Luck is the clear-cut choice. That would leave Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III for the Redskins, who traded up with the Rams for the second pick. Eight NFL coaches and executives were polled at league meetings Tuesday and all of them said they believed Luck would and should be the top pick. "Luck is just a safer pick," one AFC executive said. "They are both productive, high-quality kids from great families. You can't go wrong with either one. But if you're asking me about whom to take, I have to go with Luck, especially if you're Indianapolis after what they just had with [Peyton] Manning and the awful season they went through. "Get a guy who you know can play right away. At worst, Luck is going to be a good player who can come in and run the offense from Day 1. ... Griffin might end up being better, no question. He's an amazing athlete. But the learning curve with him is going to be a little longer because of the things he did in college."

Owners Approve Cap Penalties For Cowboys, Redskins

Jul 31, 2014 9:16 PM

NFL owners have ratified the agreement between the league and NFLPA that takes away $36 million in salary cap space from the Redskins and $10 million from the Cowboys. Dallas and Washington were the only clubs that voted to oppose the agreement, which raised the salary cap for 2012 from about $113 million to $120.6 million. Both teams were penalized for overloading contracts in the 2010 uncapped season despite league warnings not to do so. Each must take at least half the reduction this year.

Cowboys, Redskins File Grievance Over Cap Penalties

Sep 12, 2014 7:33 PM

The Cowboys and Redskins have filed a grievance against the NFL and the NFLPA to have $46 million in salary cap penalties overturned. "Within the confines of our collective bargaining agreement, we are trying to have a voice and a hearing in terms of our cap situation," Cowboys director of player personnel Stephen Jones said. Dallas is hoping to avoid legal action. The Cowboys were penalized $10 million against the salary cap by the league because they, along with the Redskins, were penalized for $36 million, front-loaded contracts during the uncapped 2010 season. The penalties were split evenly over the 2012 and 2013 seasons for the two teams.

Griffin Isn't Conceding Top Pick To Luck

Nov 17, 2014 11:25 PM

Robert Griffin III doesn't believe that it's not a foregone conclusion the Colts will bypass him for Andrew Luck with the first overall pick. Griffin was in Tampa to participate in Jon Gruden's ESPN quarterback camp just 48 hours after his Pro Day in Waco, Texas. The event attracted new Colts coach Chuck Pagano and Indy quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen. "If you say you don't want to be picked No. 1, that means you're not a competitor," Griffin said. "In my mind, there are two No. 1 picks this year and you never know what's going to happen on draft day."

Cowboys Plan To Fight Cap Penalties

Oct 31, 2014 5:56 AM

Jerry Jones says the Cowboys plan to fight the NFL's decision to strip the team, along with the Redskins, of cap space. The NFL is taking $10 million from Dallas and $36 million from Washington in 2012 for front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season, according to sources. "We will and have expressed that we don't agree with that," Jones said. "What we're doing is a combination procedural and legal and all of that."

Report: Williams Put $15k Bounty On Brad Johnson In 2006

Oct 11, 2014 4:45 AM

Gregg Williams reportedly put a $15,000 bounty on Brad Johnson before a Monday Night Football game when he was the defensive coordinator for the Redskins. Johnson was with the Vikings and had a bad relationship with Dan Snyder. “Gregg came in and dropped $15,000 on the (table) and said, ‘Brad Johnson doesn’t finish this game. This is Wednesday and the money will go up later in the week. It could double or triple by the end of the week,’ “one of the players recalled. “A couple of guys kinda got excited. (Defensive line coach) Greg Blache said, ‘If you get fined, it will be taken care of.’ A second player corroborated his teammate’s account. “I can’t say for sure it was $15,000, but I definitely remember that happening before that Minnesota game,” the second player said. “And I can’t say for sure that those were G-Dub’s exact words about Brad Johnson, but that was certainly the message. I had never heard anything like that before from a coach, but I wasn’t shocked because that was G-Dub’s character, so in your face. His language was always X-rated and our meetings were usually pretty nuts.”

Prior to a 2009 stint in Houston, Grossman played his first six years with Chicago, which selected him in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.
