Gibbs Behind Rookie Financial Seminar

Sep 1, 2014 1:17 PM

Joe Gibbs is behind the NFL rookie financial seminar this week. "A player would be upset with his contract, (and) we'd be in serious discussions," says the former coach, who guided the Redskins to all three of their Super Bowl titles during his 16-year head coaching career. "And during the conversation, it dawns on you, 'Are you in financial trouble?' That happens over and over again. "It played out a lot." After subsequent conversations with DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the decertified NFL Players Association, Gibbs will expand his crusade Tuesday and Wednesday in Bradenton, Fla., at the union's inaugural The Business of Football: Rookie Edition, a program designed to supplant the league's annual rookie symposium which was scrapped this year due to the lockout. Approximately 125 incoming players (254 were drafted in April) are expected to attend, and they will benefit from the tutelage of five Strayer financial planning experts.

McNabb Isn't A Fan Of Twitter

May 23, 2014 12:48 AM

Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, in a wide-ranging interview with ESPN Chicago's with "Waddle and Silvy," said that he's against the use of sites like Twitter. "First of all I'm not a fan of twitter," McNabb said. "Nothing against their program or what they have, but as an athlete I think you need to get off twitter. All these social networks of you tweeting about you watching a game when you wanna be playing in it, but you're mad you're not playing in it, so you're gonna criticize someone that's playing in it. I don't believe that that's the right deal. That's not professional by any means and you know we are all in a fraternity, so if you see a guy who's struggling this isn't the time to jump on him or kick him while he's down because that same guy will come against you and kinda blast your team out the water, so I think for an athlete to be twittering is the wrong move. It's one of those things to leave to the fans and let them comment on certain things, but athletes need to get off twitter."

McNabb Ranks Urlacher As 'Top Three' LB

Nov 8, 2014 8:38 PM

Dhani Jones started a firestorm when he knocked Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher earlier this week. Jones excluded Urlacher on his list of the NFL's top ten linebackers, while ranking himself seventh for the NFL Network. Urlacher didn't seem too bothered by the snub, but he did fire back at Jones. Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb was asked to share his perspective during an interview Friday on the "Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. "Brian is a very effective linebacker and a great leader," McNabb said. "A guy who gets to the ball. He's in the right places at the right time. When you're a veteran linebacker, those are your qualities. "It's not about your speed anymore. It's not about guys running sideline to sideline. It's about being in the right gap at the right time, it's about getting the guys in the right position to be successful. That's what Brian is. Brian is your guy that you have confidence that he's going to make the big play on third down when you need it." McNabb then ranked Urlacher. "Brian, to me, is one of the top three linebackers in the game," McNabb said. "I believe once he's done -- he has five or six years left in him, maybe more -- I believe he'll end up being a Hall of Famer."

McNabb Works Out With Former Eagles Teammates

Nov 17, 2014 10:01 PM

Donovan McNabb took part in an informal player workout with some of his former Eagles teammates on Wednesday. McNabb was in the Philadelphia area for the dedication of the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Voorhees Replacement Hospital, which he helped fund. "I'm just working out right now," McNabb told CSNPhilly.com. "As you can see, I'm in some great shape, and I'm only going to get better." McNabb hasn't taken part in any of Washington's informal workouts. He isn't expected to be with the team next season and has famously vowed that his 2011 season will be "special."

Cooley: Redskins Need Better Receivers

Aug 7, 2014 1:03 PM

The Redskins may lose Santana Moss to free agency, which may leave them almost weapon-less at wide receiver. "I'm sure we'll try to sign Santana Moss back, but we need a big-time receiver," tight end Chris Cooley said. "We've got to have someone step in and fill that position." Washington drafted Miami's Leonard Hankerson, Nebraska's Paul Niles and Aldrick Robinson from SMU, but there remains a void in the "big-time receiver" department.

McNabb Promises 'Special' 2011 Season

Jul 14, 2014 2:50 AM

Donovan McNabb may not know exactly where he'll be playing next season, but he promises to put together a "special" campaign. McNabb was interviewed on 'The Real Robinson Report' -- a YouTube project by Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson. "For my Facetime: 2011 is different than 2010. For those who wanna sit back and dwell on what happened last year, so be it," McNabb said. "But 2011's gonna be a special season. A season in which I feel that I've prepared myself well -- not just conditioning and strengthwise, but most importantly getting back to the fundamentals. And I look to display that in the 2011 season. And for those who feel like it can't be possible: I'll prove you wrong."

GM: Redskins Don't Regret McNabb Trade

Aug 8, 2014 5:11 PM

Redskins general manager Bruce Allen insists that the team doesn't regret making the trade for Donovan McNabb prior to the 2010 NFL Draft. "We would make the move again to get Donovan," Allen said. "The 6-10 (record) isn't what we had dreamed for our season, and I can't pinpoint one person to blame for that. We have to improve special teams, defense and offense." Allen did not blame McNabb for last season's woes. "Donovan's performance last year was part of the team's performance. I usually don't try to single out one player for wins or losses. He was a good captain for us." Allen also played down speculation that McNabb had trouble adjusting to the system run by offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, saying: "I think they (McNabb and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan) gelled very well at times. It was the first year for everybody with the Washington Redskins and it takes time to in order for people to learn the other person's desires."

Beck: No Friction With Grossman

Aug 23, 2014 5:32 AM

Redskins quarterback John Beck insists that there is no friction between him and Rex Grossman. The pair both campaigned for the team's starting quarterback job last month. "We're both professionals," Beck said. "We've been in this situation before. I get that question asked all the time. But is this the first time that either one of us has competed for a job with an NFL team? No. We know what the feeling's like. We know the way the team views it. We know how we have to both be as the quarterback of the team. It's part of the job and both of us know that, and we're used to it and that's just what it is."

Redskins Unlikely To Make Bold Moves

Sep 12, 2014 9:19 PM

The Redskins have a number of unsettled positions and moves to make once the NFL lockout is solved, but they are unlikely to make a huge splash. Washington is expected to part with quarterback Donovan McNabb and defender Albert Haynesworth and a decision has to be made on veteran receiver Santana Moss as well. "The Redskins used restraint in the draft, trading back several times and adding picks, and could use a measure of patience in free agency, too. Don't expect the team – in an offseason in which previous mistakes Donovan McNabb and Albert Haynesworth will be cast away – to make any shocking or bold moves, although the roster still needs help in a few ways," writes Pro Football Weekly.

Haslett: Haynesworth Doesn't Want To Do Anything

Aug 9, 2014 9:10 PM

Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett explained his issues with Albert Haynesworth in an interview with 101 ESPN radio in St. Louis. Haslett qualified his statements by saying he likes Haynesworth and that he believes the defensive lineman can still thrive if returned to a 4-3 scheme. "He can do almost anything he wants. He doesn't want to do anything. To me that's the issue," Haslett said. "He's one of those guys you walk in a meeting and you tell him, 'Put down the phone.' The next day you have to tell him to put down the phone. The next day, you tell him to put down the phone. "You tell him, 'Don't read the newspaper in meetings.' The next day you have to tell him the same thing. It doesn't stick; it's an every-day thing." Haynesworth set an NFL record in 2009 with $41 million guaranteed as part of a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins. He exasperated Redskins coaches by essentially refusing to be part of the team's 3-4 defense last season. "He just didn't want to play in this scheme. He didn't want to play in the 3-4," Haslett said in the interview. "He didn't want to do the things we wanted. Then we said, 'OK, if you're not going to do it, let's not do it. Let's play nickel, play the 3-technique.' "Then, it got to the point where he said, 'I don't want to play first- and second-down nickel. I just want to play third-down nickel.' Oh my God, you're relegating yourself to 10-15 snaps a game. Then after that he didn't want to do the blitzes, he just wanted to rush."
