Haynesworth Has Case Dismissed
A northern Virginia judge has dismissed a road-rage assault charge against Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth after the player reached an agreement with the alleged victim.
A judge can dismiss misdemeanor assaults under a provision called "accord and satisfaction," in which a victim says he has been made whole, according to Virginia law.
Police say the man accused Haynesworth of punching him in a traffic altercation in Reston.
The man told investigators he made a gesture at Haynesworth for tailgating him.
Kyle Shanahan Making Washington's QB Decisions?
The Redskins appear primed to hand their starting quarterback job to John Beck, who has just four NFL starts on his resume.
" ... heading into Shanahan's second season running things, are kicking veteran Donovan McNabb to the curb in favor of Beck, whose only starts came in 2007 with the Miami Dolphins," writes Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.
"Credit that one to the Shanahan family -- son, Kyle, is the team's offensive coordinator. Inside the team's building, there are plenty who wonder why McNabb won't be around to be the starter.
"'I'll tell you why,' one source said. 'The son doesn't like him.'"
Snyder Turns Over Decisions To Shanahan
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder says he doesn't want to be involved in football operations.
Snyder told NBC Washington that the perception that he's hands-on -- perhaps overly so -- with football decisions is incorrect.
"You know what's interesting ... is a little bit of a misperception here," Snyder said. "When Joe Gibbs was here for over four seasons, nobody came to talk to me about football, and the same thing now. It was very similar between Mike Shanahan and Joe Gibbs, that they take command of the football team, and I love that.
"I mean, for me it's easy. I don't want to be involved. I enjoyed this draft probably more than any draft we had, because these guys worked so hard at preparation. It's very different than Vinny Cerrato -- their structure -- and I can tell you that I thought the trades and the moves that Bruce made to accomplish what he accomplished was really remarkable. It was a great Redskin day, and I think people two or three years from now are going to love this draft."
Redskins' Coaches Don't Back Players In Lockout
Redskins coaches were not part of the group of coaches that filed a brief Wednesday with the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals requesting that NFL owners lift the lockout, according to a letter coaches sent to the league Thursday.
The letter, signed by every head coach except Mike Shanahan, who is part of the team's management, says that "we stand united with our ownership and the brief does not reflect our thoughts on the matter."
A source familiar with the situation said the Redskins' coaches grew concerned that the court document filed by the Coaches Association Wednesday could jeopardize their relationship with management and possibly cost them their jobs.
Haynesworth's Trial Postponed To Next Week
Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth's trial on misdemeanor charges related to an alleged road-rage assault in northern Virginia has been postponed.
Lawyers said Haynesworth may be in the process of settling the matter with the alleged victim, which is permissible under Virginia law. The trial had been set for Thursday in Fairfax County. Now it's set for Tuesday.
Rypien: McNabb Is 'The Perfect Guy For The Job'
Former Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien believes that Donovan McNabb is the right man to start for the team.
Rypein was the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI.
"For all intents and purposes, I thought Donovan was the perfect guy for the job here," Rypien told The Washington Post. "When you can't protect your guy, you're only as good as the guys up front. I don't care how talented you are. Donovan's one of the most talented that has ever played the game. The understanding is that's where it all starts."
Both Rex Grossman and John Beck claim they're ready to become the team's starter.
McNabb Is OK With Beck's Comments
Donovan McNabb is fine with John Beck seeing himself as Washington's No. 1 quarterback.
"For someone who's so quiet and really just tries to be the best at what I do -- and to be a part of the firestorm every offseason -- it's amazing," McNabb said when asked about the latest controversy.
McNabb said he didn't take offense to Beck's comments.
"John is a great guy. He does a great job preparing himself," he said. "I've known him since he was about 16 years old. I've trained with him in Arizona, he went to BYU. He's done a great job, and I'm sure he's taking on that role because he's kind of been given the position, so to speak. He'll do a good job if that was to happen. But whatever the situation is -- if I'm here, if I'm elsewhere -- I'm gonna be ready to go."
McNabb A Possibility For Ravens?
If Marc Bulger leaves the Ravens as a free agent, the team will then be in the market for a backup to starting quarterback Joe Flacco.
Washington's Donovan McNabb might be able to fill the void.
The Baltimore Sun writes that the possibility shouldn't be ruled out, although Flacco and McNabb would have to check their egos at the door.
The market for McNabb appears to be drying up and his time in Washington is considered over.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was on Andy Reid's staff in Philadelphia for 10 years, but it is unknown how close he was with McNabb.
Grossman Feels Like Washington's Starter
Rex Grossman feels as though he is the starting quarterback of the Redskins.
Grossman isn't even under contract with Washington for next season.
"If you're asking me, I definitely feel like I'm the starter. But I'm not even signed yet, so I'm assuming a lot of things here," Grossman said on ESPN980-AM. "I feel like I'm coming into the prime of my experience, and I know exactly what I can do well, what my weaknesses are and what my strengths are and how it relates to this offense.
"I've been in a lot of situations, crucial games, I've played in a Super Bowl. I feel like I'm so much better than I was then that I'd love the opportunity to have a full season with this offense and have a whole season to really feel like this is my team. That's my goal."
John Beck has been endorsed by coach Mike Shanahan and he made public comments about his candidacy for the starting position as well.
Beck Believes He Can Be Washington's Starter
John Beck believes he has a legitimate shot to be the starting quarterback for the Redskins next season.
"I think I have a legitimate chance," Beck told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "Coach (head coach Mike Shanahan) hasn't told me anything but go out there and work as hard as you can, do the best that you can, and try to earn this job. That's what's been said to me. Really, that's all I can ask for.
"I just want to make sure that I'm doing all I can preparation-wise, training-wise, mentally, so that when my opportunity comes I knock it out of the park."
Beck has been organizing player workouts on large and small scales in the Washington area.
"I am excited for my opportunity, and the way this NFL goes they're going to need to bring someone else in, re-sign Rex (Grossman), they're going to do something," said Beck, who is heading into his fifth NFL season.
"I just want to make sure I put myself in the situation to win the starting job so when this thing opens up and we can start playing games I'm the guy."
