Campbell Was 'Shocked' By Sanchez Talk
Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell admitted on Monday that he was shocked to hear USC quarterback Mark Sanchez's name linked to Washington leading into the draft.
"It definitely was a shock," Campbell told the Associated Press, "when I started hearing Sanchez talk."
A source familiar with the situation claims that Campbell would have asked for a trade if the Redskins were successful in their attempts to trade up and get Sanchez.
"It's an awkward situation," Campbell said, "just because after the Cutler deal, we did sit down and talk -- and then the Sanchez talk came up."
Redskins Sign Chase Daniel
The Redskins have signed undrafted free agent quarterback Chase Daniel, formerly of the Missouri Tigers.
Daniel was a Heisman finalist in 2007, and told The Kansas City Star that he would likely depart for Redskins minicamp on Thursday.
"Chris Meidt was the guy that worked me out at the combine, and he really liked me," Daniel said of the Redskins assistant coach. "I talked to [head] coach [Jim] Zorn a couple of times. I'm excited about the opportunity they presented."
Redskins Had Orakpo In Their Top Five
The Redskins selected Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo with the 13th overall pick in Saturday's draft, and were very happy that he was available.
"He was high," Washington vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said of where the team rated Orakpo. "He was in the top five."
"I was shocked that he fell. I think the thing that helped was that if Cleveland would have stayed at five, they would have probably taken [B.J.] Raji or [Brian] Orakpo and that takes a defensive player off. Then he probably goes. I think that helped us because an offensive player went, it pushed another defensive player back," Cerrato added.
Redskins: 2010 First-Round Pick Not On Block
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder says that the team's first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft is not on the market.
"We're not going to be trading next year's 1," Snyder told radio station ESPN980 in an interview Friday. "We've already said that several times."
Washington has the 13th choice in this year's draft, and have reportedly been looking to trade up.
"We're really not as a franchise comfortable trading first-round draft picks," Snyder said. "I don't think it's a wise move to keep trading that pick. It's always a little bit risky."
Redskins Sign OT Mike Williams
The Washington Redskins signed offensive tackle Mike Williams and released punter Dirk Johnson on Friday.
Williams hasn't played in the NFL since 2005. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the No. 4 overall pick in 2002.
Campbell Will Request Trade If Redskins Draft Sanchez
Jason Campbell will request to be traded if the Redskins draft quarterback Mark Sanchez on Saturday, NFL sources said on Thursday night.
The Redskins were unaware of Campbell's potential trade demand, said Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations. "We've heard nothing," Cerrato said. "Zero."
Redskins Could Deal Up For Sanchez
Team officials are indicating that the Redskins could attempt to trade up in this weekend's NFL Draft in order to take USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.
"I think anything is possible," Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said during the pre-draft news conference at Redskins Park. "It's just what you're willing to give up."
The Redskins have the 13th overall pick, but have no picks in the second and fourth rounds.
Redskins Interested In Brian Orakpo
Texas defensive lineman Brian Orakpo could be gone by the time the Redskins use the 13th overall pick this Saturday, but Washington is interested in him.
Team officials have indicated that they would jump on the defender should he slip lower than expected.
Orakpo completed a two-day visit to Redskins Park last week.
"The visit with Washington went really well," Orakpo said. "I got a chance to meet Mr. Snyder and [executive vice president] Vinny Cerrato and Coach [Jim] Zorn and the rest of coaching staff. We had a nice dinner, and I know Mr. Snyder likes to take care of his players, and we had a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant, a good steakhouse, and it was a good chance for them to get to know you better and have a little fun.
"But then it got very in-depth as soon as the actual visit on site the next day. I watched film and talked to [linebackers] coach K.O. [Kirk Olivadotti], and what they see in me doing is some linebacker and also some D-end, and trying to use my versatility to my advantage."
Redskins Host USC LB Maualuga
The Redskins aren't in dire need of a middle linebacker, but they have decided to host USC's Ray Maualuga on Tuesday.
Washington has the 13th overall pick in next Saturday's NFL Draft, while Maualuga is projected to go in the second half of the first round.
