The NFL is likely to flex the Week 6 game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers to NBC's Sunday Night Football. Both the 49ers and Rams are currently undefeated.
The NFL can begin to flex games in Week 5 and can choose two games to flex between Weeks 5-10.
NBC is currently slated to show the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6.
Anthony Lynn told reporters on Thursday that once Melvin Gordon is up to speed, he will be the Los Angeles Chargers' starter moving forward.
"He was our starter for a reason," Lynn said. "I like the way Austin [Ekeler] and JJ [Justin Jackson] have been working. They've done an excellent job and proved they can play in this league. They will still have a major role in this offense, but as soon as Melvin's ready, he'll go back to being our No. 1 guy."
Gordon ended his 64-day holdout due to a contract impasse with the team this week.
Lynn said Gordon is unlikely to play on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, although he could travel with the team.
Melvin Gordon could report to the Los Angeles Chargers sooner rather than later, according to sources.
Gordon had previously planned to report in October. No final decisions have been made by the running back.
He must report no later than Nov. 29 to play and accrue credit for this season toward becoming a free agent in the offseason.
Gordon is scheduled to make $5.605 million in the final season of his rookie deal.
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed Lance Kendricks.
The Chargers are without Hunter Henry at tight end for several weeks due to a left knee injury.
Kendricks was signed by the New England Patriots in the offseason and then released.
Kendricks spent 2017 and 2018 with the Packers, after six seasons with the Rams. In eight seasons, he has 2,505 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.
Melvin Gordon will continue his holdout to "protect himself", but plans on reporting to the Los Angeles Chargers at some point in 2019, according to a source.
"This is not a Le'Veon Bell situation," the source said. "He still wants to be a Charger. But he's got to protect himself."
The Chargers have shown little-to-no flexibility in moving off their high asking price for a trade of Gordon.
Gordon has made two Pro Bowls since the Chargers drafted him 15th overall in 2015. His 28 rushing touchdowns over the past three years tied for the league lead with Ezekiel Elliott.
Philip Rivers is in the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, but he's not concerned.
Rivers told the NFL Network that he's "at peace" with his contract situation.
The quarterback turns 38 in December.
“I really just feel at peace about that. Tom [Telesco] and I had really good conversations throughout the last couple months. I think it’s sincere, the both of us, really desire I’m still a Charger in 2020,” Rivers said. “I think that sincerity will make it all work out. Had it worked out before the regular season got started, I’d have been fine with it, but it didn’t. Shoot, hey let’s just wait and it kinda worked best for both sides to do that. I really feel good about it. I’m in a good place.”
Hunter Henry will miss four to six weeks with a tibia plateau fracture to his left knee.
Despite a run of injuries since entering the NFL in 2016, Henry leads the Chargers with 12 touchdown receptions since the start of the 2016 season.
The Chargers could consider signing Luke Wilson or Antonio Gates to fill in for Henry.
Melvin Gordon is prepared to extend his holdout until late November when he would have to report to make sure his contract does not toll for this season in order to become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
The Los Angeles Chargers pulled their offer to Gordon and won't discuss a new contract until after the season.
If Gordon were to hold out until the deadline, he would be back with the Chargers for their final five games of the season: at Denver, at Jacksonville, home vs. Minnesota, home vs. Oakland and at Kansas City.
The Philadelphia Eagles offered Jordan Howard and a mid-round pick swap to the Los Angeles Chargers for Melvin Gordon.
The Chargers rejected the offer as they would have been also required to pay a portion of Gordon's salary.
Philadelphia acquired Howard from the Bears this offseason in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick.
Philadelphia's proposed deal was "more of a conceptual conversation."
