Melvin Gordon's Holdout Expected To Last Into Season

Aug 22, 2019 8:01 AM

Melvin Gordon's holdout is expected to last into the regular season, according to a report.

Contract talks with the Los Angeles Chargers haven't progressed as Gordon hoped and he'll continue to train elsewhere.

The running back is set to make $5.6 million in 2019, but wants a deal that places him among the top players at his position. It was previously reported that the Chargers offered $10 million annually, but weren't willing to go higher.

Philip Rivers Voices Support For Melvin Gordon

Aug 16, 2019 3:05 PM

Philip Rivers made his first public comments about Melvin Gordon's holdout on Thursday.

"I know Melvin knows I'm pulling for him," Rivers said. "And in saying that, that means you want what's best for him. You want him to feel great. You want him to be at peace with how it all ends, and hopefully it's right here.

"He knows that. I doubt anything I said will make PFT [Pro Football Talk] headlines, but I think those that know me will know that's what I meant all along."

There had been reports that there was friction between Rivers and Gordon.

When asked about the players the Los Angeles Chargers have behind Gordon at running back a few weeks ago, Rivers threw his support behind Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and Detrez Newsome.

"It certainly is a deep position for us and those guys all love to play and work hard," Rivers said then. "So, you know like I said, we love Melvin, but we're going to go with what we got. It's a pretty dang good group."
