Jul 26, 2019 8:25 AM

Melvin Gordon's holdout for a new contract from the Los Angeles Chargers is expected to be prolonged and could last into the season, according to sources.

The two sides have exchanged figures in recent days without significant progress.

Gordon is in the final year of a rookie contract that is scheduled to pay him $5.6 million. The running back told the Chargers through his representation that if he does not receive a new deal, he'll sit out and demand a trade.

Melvin Gordon says his teammates and running backs around the league support him as his contract dispute with the Los Angeles Chargers reaches a week.

"They're all behind me. They all got my back," Gordon said. "They all told me 'You know what -- we don't really speak on contracts -- but you just go and do what's best for your family.' And I'm glad I got that support from them."

The Chargers drafted Gordon, 26, 15th overall in 2015. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract -- a fifth-year option worth $5.6 million.
