Junior Seau's Family Not Allowed To Speak At Hall Of Fame Ceremony

Jul 24, 2015 3:51 PM

Junior Seau's family will not be allowed to speak at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Aug. 8th.

Seau had told this family if he ever made it, he wanted his daughter, Sydney, to introduce him.

The Hall of Fame will only show a video that will commemorate his career, while avoiding questions about his suicide in 2012 and the subsequent diagnosis of traumatic brain injury that doctors said they believed was brought on by hits to his head. Nor will the video mention the lawsuit that Seau’s family has filed against the N.F.L., which is trying to curb injuries in active players and address brain disease in thousands of retired ones.

“It’s frustrating because the induction is for my father and for the other players, but then to not be able to speak, it’s painful,” Sydney said. “I just want to give the speech he would have given. It wasn’t going to be about this mess. My speech was solely about him.”

Seau’s brain injury and suicide have nothing to with the decision to only show a video, according to Joe Horrigan, a spokesman for the Hall of Fame who has overseen the ceremony for about 20 years.

For deceased inductees, presenters spoke but Horrigan said they often repeated what was in the video, prolonging an already lengthy ceremony. So a few years ago, the Hall eliminated speeches in these cases.

“There was an acceptance speech for deceased players but it got redundant,” Horrigan said. “The honor is supposed to be for the individual.”

Philip Rivers Showing 'Little Urgency' In Negotiating With Chargers

Jul 21, 2015 11:51 AM

Philip Rivers has been showing "little urgency" in negotiating with the San Diego Chargers on a new deal.

The Chargers, however, maintain hope of signing Rivers to a new deal.

Rivers has been reluctant to commit to the Chargers with the franchise potentially moving to Los Angeles.

Rivers has subsequently said that he’s “willing to listen to anything” when it comes to an extension and that it “would be awesome” to remain with the Chargers.

L.A. Coliseum Offers To Host One NFL Team

Jul 9, 2015 11:00 PM

USC, which operates the Coliseum, confirmed Thursday it will submit a proposal to the NFL. But under the terms of USC's lease with the Coliseum Commission, the university can host only one team at the stadium on a temporary basis of up to four years.

"USC will be responding to the NFL's RFP [request for proposal] and we hope to welcome an NFL team into the Coliseum starting in the 2016 season," Todd Dickey, USC's senior vice president for administration, said in a written statement.

The Rose Bowl decision was especially surprising because in 2005, when the venue gave up its bid to be a permanent NFL home, Pasadena funded an environmental impact report to position the Rose Bowl as a temporary site.

Rose Bowl Not Interested In Being Temporary NFL Home

Jul 9, 2015 10:52 PM

Officials of the Rose Bowl do not want their stadium to serve as a temporary home for an NFL team that relocates to Los Angeles.

The RBOC, which runs the Pasadena stadium, decided it was more productive and lucrative for the Rose Bowl to pursue a music and arts festival, which would take place annually during three days in June.

“We believe that a music and arts festival is more fitting with Pasadena's brand and with the future of the stadium,” said Victor Gordo, RBOC president and a member of the Pasadena City Council. “With our desire to have certainty of finances of the stadium, and to have a world-class event that's fitting of the city.”

Jul 4, 2015 11:41 AM

Antonio Gates has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

In a statement, Gates said he did not knowingly take a banned substance, but he acknowledged he did take supplements this offseason and would accept the consequences.

"I take full responsibility for my actions," Gates said. "I'd like to express my sincere apologies to the Chargers, my teammates, coaches, fans and the league who have always supported me and expected and gotten nothing but the highest level of integrity from me."
