Rivers Intensely Studying New Chargers' Offense

Jun 26, 2014 4:44 PM

Philip Rivers has begun intensive studying of the San Diego Chargers' new offensive system.

“I’ve always studied and grinded hard and worked at it,” Rivers said. “But I didn’t have to study what the running backs plays and routes were in the past. I knew it … Now, I don’t have it down stone cold. I hate not having it down stone cold.”

Mike McCoy was talking last month at the NFL Owners Meetings and said the Chargers would proceed this offseason however quickly Rivers would allow them.

“Our install will go as fast as the quarterback can handle,” McCoy said then. “Everyone else has got to keep up with the quarterback.

“He wants to learn every little detail of the offense,” McCoy said this past week, shortly after running his first practice as Chargers head coach. “Even out there today, he was asking some great questions about the next step in what we’re doing and it’s like, ‘Hold on now, slow down, it’s just Day One out there. We will get to that, but right now we’re introducing the base to everybody.’ ”

Rivers puts up solid numbers nearly every season, but the Chargers haven't been able to get over the hump with him at quarterback.

Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego writes that 2013 will be Rivers' "final audition" with the Chargers.
