Seau's Family Files Suit Against NFL

Nov 15, 2014 7:52 AM

Junior Seau's family has filed a lawsuit against the NFL, claiming his suicide was a result of brain disease cause by violent hits during his career.

The wrongful death lawsuit, filed Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Diego, blames the NFL for its "acts or omissions" that hid the dangers of repetitive blows to the head. It says Seau developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from those hits, and accuses the NFL of deliberately ignoring and concealing evidence of the risks associated with traumatic brain injuries.

Seau shot himself last May at the age of 43.

"Our attorneys will review it and respond to the claims appropriately through the court," the NFL said in a statement Wednesday.

Helmet manufacturer Riddell Inc., also is being sued by the Seaus, who say Riddell was "negligent in their design, testing, assembly, manufacture, marketing, and engineering of the helmets" used by NFL players. The suit says the helmets were unreasonably dangerous and unsafe.

NFL On Cycle Of Hiring Offensive-Minded, White Head Coaches

Oct 31, 2014 3:45 PM

The NFL appears to be in a cycle where franchises are looking for offensive head coaches. They have also been uniformly white men this offseason.

The NFL had eight head coach openings this offseason and all six of the hires have been by white men lauded for their ability to coach on offense.

Andy Reid (Chiefs), Doug Marrone (Bills), Rob Chudzinski (Browns), Mike McCoy (Chargers), Marc Trestman (Bears) and Chip Kelly (Eagles) have all been hired.

The favorites for the final two positions are Bruce Arians for the Cardinals and Greg Roman for the Jaguars.

All of the general manager hires have also been white men.

The NFL requires the interview of at least one minority candidate for every head coach and GM position.

Seau Suffered From CTE

Oct 31, 2014 7:09 AM

Junior Seau suffered from the type of chronic brain damage that has also been experienced by dozens of deceased former NFL players, according to five brain specialists.

Seau's ex-wife, Gina, and his oldest son Tyler, 23, told ABC News and ESPN in an exclusive interview they were informed last week that Seau's brain had tested positive for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease that can lead to dementia, memory loss and depression.

CTE is a progressive disease associated with repeated head trauma. Although long known to occur in boxers, it was not discovered in football players until 2005.

"I think it's important for everyone to know that Junior did indeed suffer from CTE," Gina Seau said. "It's important that we take steps to help these players. We certainly don't want to see anything like this happen again to any of our athletes."

Seau committed suicide in May.
