Floyd Takes Over 'Z' Position For Chargers

Sep 26, 2014 12:26 PM

Danario Alexander was on the field for snaps last week instead of a healthy Robert Meachem, but Malcom Floyd technically took over Meachem's position.

Floyd played the "Z" receiver, which was previously played by Meachem and Vincent Jackson in the past.

The “Z” typically lines up on the same side as tight end Antonio Gates.

Chargers Waiting For Mathews To Break Long Run

Jul 16, 2014 4:30 PM

Ryan Mathews has the ability to break long runs, but hasn't done so since being a first round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2010.

Mathews has carried the ball 475 times in his career, but none have gone for 40 or more yards. Only BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Shonn Greene have 300 or more carries since 2010 without a 40-yard gain.

The focus is to polish Mathews' decisions and habits in the open field through film analysis and game experience.

“I've got to score when I get plays like that,” said Mathews, who had a season-long gain of 31 yards last week against the Chiefs. “Regardless of where I'm at on the field, if I get a breakaway, I've got to score with it. It's all it is.”
