Turner Unlikely To Be Fired By Chargers During Season

Sep 26, 2014 10:54 PM

The San Diego Chargers have lost three straight games to fall to 3-4, but Norv Turner's job is not yet in jeopardy.

"You're coaching on a week-to-week basis," Turner said Monday when asked if he's coaching for his job. "I'm coaching to do the best job I can to get our team ready to play Kansas City. All those other conversations, they're going to take place. You know they're going to take place."

Turner said he hasn't spoken about his job status with either general manager A.J. Smith or team president Dean Spanos.

The Chargers are unlikely to fire Turner during the season.

Turner is the de facto offensive coordinator since he calls the teams plays and Spanos has a history of not making knee-jerk reactions.

Nate Kaeding Cut By Chargers

Oct 31, 2014 6:37 AM

The San Diego Chargers placed Nate Kaeding on injured reserve with a relatively minor groin injury.

Kaeding must be released by the Chargers once he passes a physical.

Kaeding is the NFL's most accurate kicker of all time with an 87.0-percent career conversion rate in the regular season.

The Chargers have also carried Nick Novak over the past three games, but could no longer afford to have two kickers on their roster.

Chargers Not Announcing Starting RB

Oct 31, 2014 10:41 AM

Norv Turner isn't announcing who the San Diego Chargers will start on Sunday against the Saints.

Ryan Mathews has been limited by the Chargers due to fumble issues.

“I wouldn’t say he lost his starting job,” Jackie Battle said. “It’s just a title. He’s still going to get his reps. I’m still going to get mine.”

Said Turner: “It’s not a big deal. One had 14 carries and one had 15 carries, and if we can get that done again, it’ll be outstanding.”

Texans, Falcons, Bengals, Chargers Lead In 1st Half Differential

Jul 14, 2014 4:09 PM

An often overlooked aspect of football is to establish an early lead. Rather than worrying about establishing the pass or the run, simply getting an early lead allows the specific elements of the game to fall into place.

The Texans, Falcons, Bengals and Chargers lead in first half point differential.

The bottom-five are the Chiefs, Jaguars, Lions, Titans and Panthers.

Mathews Accepts Limited Role Sunday As Penance For Fumble

Jul 26, 2014 6:14 AM

Ryan Mathews didn't start the San Diego Chargers' Week 4 win over the Chiefs and only had four carries by the start of the fourth quarter.

Mathews had a fumble last week in his first game of the 2012 season.

“I kind of expected it from last week,” Mathews said. “But you can't (dwell on) that. You've just got to keep playing and cheering on your teammates when you're not in and go 100 miles per hour when you are.”

Norv Turner said after the game he has “great trust” in Mathews.

Mathews finished with 61 yards on 14 carries, splitting time with Jackie Battle.

“We just have a lot of guys that can make plays,” Turner said when asked about the backfield split. “I thought it was important to let Jackie start the game. I wanted to make sure we got into a rhythm. We had a plan for specific things for Ryan, and I thought he responded in the four minutes right there at the end. He was rolling and hitting it.

“You ask about the confidence I have in him. We're trying to put the game away, and he's the guy handling the ball, so I think that answers that question.”
