Chargers Name John Pagano New D-Coordinator

Jul 25, 2014 11:33 PM

The Chargers named John Pagano the team’s new defensive coordinator, replacing Greg Manusky, who was released earlier in the day. Pagano spent the last 10 seasons on San Diego’s staff and has coached linebackers since 2005. “John has worked extremely hard and been very patient to get this opportunity,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “I’m excited about John’s experience with this defense, his familiarity with our team and where we can go with his direction.” “I think the No. 1 thing is that we come together as a defensive staff and we work together to get everybody going in one direction,” Pagano said. “Our primary goal is to win the AFC West, but the ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl.” “We’re going to go out and play fundamentally sound defense,” Pagano said. “I’m very humbled and honored that they would consider me for the position,” Pagano said. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed about, being here 11 years in San Diego.”

Turner Unsure Of Future With San Diego

Oct 16, 2014 10:54 PM

Norv Turner isn't sure if he will remain as head coach of the Chargers. He is well aware that San Diego owner Dean Spanos is mulling the future of himself and general manager A.J. Smith. "I'd be excited about being back," said Turner, who's 49-31 in five years in San Diego but just 3-3 in the playoffs. "I'd be excited about this team. I don't know that unless you're living it day to day, you can appreciate what these guys have been through, what this team has been through from a physical standpoint. They've responded, and I do believe this team can go do some great things." The Chargers started 4-1 and finished 4-1 as well, but they struggled mightily in-between.

Dielman Will Risk Health For Ring

Oct 14, 2014 9:42 PM

Chargers left guard Kris Dielman, who missed the final 10 games of the season with a concussion, said Monday that he's willing to risk his health in pursuit of winning a Super Bowl ring. "Yeah, I think so," Dielman said Monday in his first comments about his injury, which caused the NFL to announce it would give game officials "concussion awareness training" so they could keep an eye out for players. "I've got some other people who probably wouldn't agree," said Dielman, who added that ultimately it will be his decision whether he returns or retires.

Turner Has Support In San Diego's Locker Room

Sep 14, 2014 9:44 PM

Despite missing the playoffs for a second straight season, Chargers coach Norv Turner clings to a core of support inside the team's locker room. "Coach did a really good job of just pushing through what nobody had ever been through before," center Nick Hardwick said. "(With all the injuries) to keep us in games even and to keep guys so upbeat and positive and continuing to work hard ... I mean, he's like a marathon man ... You know, guys respect the (heck) out of him. I love him, man. I love that guy. He's just a heck of a man, really." Turner could be fired after the season, but the players appear happy with the coach. "It hasn't been great (the past two seasons), but he's the winningest coach in the history of this place," Rivers said. "That's all I know. Are we satisfied at 8-8? Absolutely not. Did the Giants go 8-8 before they won the Super Bowl? Yeah, Pittsburgh? Yeah. Teams go 8-8 ... This year has been disappointing for everybody. We're all disappointed ... but the last eight years has been the best eight years that this franchise has ever had."
