Report: San Diego's Turner, Smith Could Save Jobs With Strong Finish

May 27, 2014 9:21 PM

The final two games of the season will likely decide the futures of Chargers coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. An ugly six-game losing streak reportedly had owner Dean Spanos feeling three weeks ago that he'd have to dismiss Turner and Smith after the season. However, an impressive win over the Ravens last weekend has forced Spanos to soften his stance. The Chargers are 7-7 and still in the playoff hunt. At 48-30, Turner has the highest winning percentage of any coach in Chargers history. Smith has been the team's general manager since 2003.

Kris Dielman Considering Retirement

Oct 9, 2014 1:09 PM

The Chargers have issues on the offensive line and those problems could remain over the long-term. Kris Dielman and Marcus McNeill are on injured reserve with their respective injuries -- Dielman following a concussion and seizure and McNeill with an unspecified neck injury that is the latest of his ongoing neck ailments. According to sources, Dielman is considering retiring. Dielman, a four-time Pro Bowler, went on injured reserve Nov. 6, two weeks after suffering a concussion in the fourth quarter against the Jets and then a gran mal seizure on the team's return flight to San Diego. It is believed Dielman can return, but the scare of the seizure and ongoing recovery and uncertainty regarding brain injuries has him concerned enough to have broached the topic of retirement with those close to him.

Report: Chargers Weigh Firing Turner, Smith

Oct 9, 2014 5:52 PM

The San Diego Union-Tribune has reported that the Chargers are at least thinking about firing coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. After starting the season 4-1, the Chargers have lost six straight games. The feeling from those around the team is that Chargers president Dean Spanos has "no choice" but to fire Turner after the season. The future of Smith also appears to be in jeopardy, with one source indicating that San Diego's longtime general manager will "almost certainly" be sent packing. "The decisions are not made," a team source said on condition of anonymity, "but everything is lined up."
