Lions, Chargers Discussing Cromartie Trade

Sep 30, 2014 9:29 PM

The Lions have begun discussions with the Chargers about acquiring cornerback Antonio Cromartie, a league source told NFL.com on Sunday. The Chargers have been shopping Cromartie, but there had been little interest until the Lions reached out. "It may be time to move on," Cromartie said recently. "I have complained to the coaches about certain stuff, about the way we play, and they know that. But if it's time to part ways and that's in the Lord's will, then that's what's got to happen. But I would love to continue to finish out either my contract or my career in San Diego."

Chargers To Place High Tenders On Merriman, Jackson, Floyd

May 16, 2014 10:03 PM

The Chargers are expected to place the highest tenders on potential free agents linebacker Shawne Merriman and wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd. A source familiar with the situation told the San Diego Union-Tribune of the team's plans. Doing so would force teams to give the Chargers a first and third round pick if they signed Merriman, Jackson or Floyd.

Source: Chargers Will Let Sproles Test Market

Oct 31, 2014 6:13 AM

The Chargers have opted not to tender running back Darren Sproles, which will allow him to leave the team without compensation. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter of the decision. If San Diego wanted to retain Sproles' rights, they would have had to tender him with an offer of nearly $7.3 million for the coming season by March 4.

Emotional L.T. Still Wants To Play

Jul 26, 2014 1:55 PM

An emotional LaDainian Tomlinson proclaimed his desire to continue playing football on Wednesday. Tomlinson thanked all those that touched him in San Diego during his career, including veterans Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison. After a few minutes, the running back could no longer hold back the tears. "It's funny because I was all prepared, said I wasn't going to do this," said Tomlinson. "Sometimes emotions is what makes a person. And as you guys know, I've always worn my emotions on my sleeve." Tomlinson added that the Chargers didn't need to explain his release. "There really wasn't an explanation. I didn't think one needed to be explained to me," said Tomlinson. "There comes a time when situations ? and we all know this is a tough business ? when the team has to make a decision that's best for the ball club. As athletes, we need to make the best decision for us as well." Even though he will miss San Diego, Tomlinson is intent on playing in 2010. "I definitely still want to play," he said. "I still think I have a lot to give to the game, not only the performing part of it on the field but the mental part of teaching young guys and guys that aspire to be great. I think that's a quality that I have that can help some teams."

Cromartie: 'It May Be Time To Move On'

Sep 1, 2014 3:09 PM

Amid trade rumors, Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie says that it may be time for him to move on. He told SIRIUS NFL Radio hosts Bryan McGovern and Jim Miller that he wasn't thrilled with the way that San Diego plays defense and it could be time for a change. "It may be time to move on," Cromartie said. "I have complained to the coaches about certain stuff, about the way we play, and they know that. But if it's time to part ways and that's in the Lord's will, then that's what's got to happen. But I would love to continue to finish out either my contract or my career in San Diego."

Will Sproles Follow Tomlinson's Path?

Oct 9, 2014 2:57 PM

The Chargers remain interested in re-signing Darren Sproles, but they won't retain him on a one-year basis as they did in 2009. Sproles made a little more than $6.6 million last season as San Diego's franchise player. Because of that, he'd earn almost $7.3 million if they tender him as a restricted free agent. The two sides are expected to discuss an extension, but if an agreement can't be reached Sproles could leave the Chargers just as LaDainian Tomlinson did earlier this week.

Chargers Release Tomlinson

May 17, 2014 1:06 AM

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers all-time leading rusher, was released today after nine seasons in San Diego. Chargers President Dean Spanos met with Tomlinson today and informed his veteran running back that he is being released. ?This is a part of the business that I hate, and it?s particularly hard when you?re dealing with someone I consider a friend,? Spanos said. ?Change involving great players is never easy. I respect LT as much or more than any player I?ve ever known. And no one appreciates his contributions to this organization more than I do. That is why this is such a difficult announcement for me to make. ?It has been a privilege to work with him and witness his entire career. I?m proud of him and grateful to him for the way he has carried himself both on and off the field. ?No matter where he chooses to continue his career, in my mind LT will always be a San Diego Charger. His legacy as one of the greatest running backs the game has ever seen will be as a Charger.?
