"Of course, at the end of the day, the organization always feels like they need to make the best decision for their business, and I'm going to have to do the same. I'm going to have to talk to my family and my agent and make the best decision for my life and my future."

Smith Calls LT In Effort To Clear Air

May 19, 2014 9:11 PM

Chargers' GM A.J. Smith called LaDainian Tomlinson on Monday in an effort to clear the air regarding their recent public back-and-forth. "It was important to me that LT know exactly what happened," Smith said on the team's site. "I just answered a question, and unfortunately my response was inappropriate. After reading my response to the question, I can see why it was interpreted the way it was. I absolutely meant no disrespect toward LT ? none. I have the utmost respect for him on two fronts ? as a player and as a person." San Diego is considering what to do with Tomlinson, who is due to make $6.725 million and count $8.79 million against the salary cap in 2009.

Merriman: LT, GM Spat 'Needs To Stop Now'

Oct 31, 2014 5:50 PM

Shawne Merriman believes that the public back-and-forth between San Diego general manager A.J. Smith and running back LaDainian Tomlinson needs to stop. "That [stuff] doesn't help bring a Super Bowl to San Diego," the linebacker told to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "And that [stuff] needs to stop, period. It needs to stop now." Last week, Tomlinson said on his site that he plans to continue his career with the Chargers. Smith appeared to take Tomlinson lightly by seemingly mocking his comments in quotes to the Union-Tribune. "Going into next season, I want people talking about how we're going to rebound from getting ... bounced from the playoffs -- not if LT is going to be there or if I'm going to be there," Merriman said.

Harrison: Handling Of Tomlinson 'Disappointing'

Oct 31, 2014 6:14 AM

Former Chargers' safety Rodney Harrison is disappointed with the way the team has handled running back LaDainian Tomlinson and his role with the team recently. "It's very disappointing, and it's very disheartening for me to see LaDainian even have to go through questions about if he's going to be a Charger," Harrison said. "I think the organization should have come out and addressed the issue. If there are any rumors coming around, it's up to your head coach, it's up to your general manager, vice president, and owner to address the issue. "LaDainian is obviously a Hall of Famer. Why should he have to question if he's going to be on the team or not? Or if he's going to be traded? Do you honestly think you are going to be a better team without LaDainian Tomlinson? It's just crazy to even think. It's disappointing."

GM On LT: I Can't Control How Long I Stay In San Diego Either

Jun 6, 2014 4:43 AM

San Diego GM A.J. Smith, who has acknowledged he is contemplating whether to release or trade LaDainin Tomlinson or renegotiate his contract, was asked about Tomlinson's statement post on his website. ?I have been getting a lot of messages on my site regarding me leaving San Diego," wrote Tomlinson. "I feel that I need to make it very clear that I have NO intentions of leaving San Diego. San Diego is where my career started and where I'd like it to end. I have nothing but love and the upmost (sic) respect for this team, the players, and the Spanos Family. Me being traded is completely out of my hands. I have ABSOLUTELY no control in that decision making. All I can do is wait and see how it all plays out. As for now, I am a Charger and will be until I am told otherwise.? ?My first reaction was we both have similar feelings,? Smith said. ?I have no intentions of leaving San Diego. San Diego is where my GM career started and where I'd like it to end. I also have nothing but love and the utmost respect for this team, the players and the Spanos family. I have absolutely no control over how long I will be with the Chargers. ?As for now, I am the Chargers' GM, and I have major decisions to ponder for the organization now and in the future. My recommendation to Dean Spanos will be what's in the best interest of the team ? both short and long term. That's my job. That's what Dean hired me to do.?

I have nothing but love and the upmost respect for this team, the players and the Spanos family (Chargers owners). Me being trade[d] is completely out of my hands.
