The Chargers have acquired tight end Brandon Manumaleuna from the St. Louis Rams in exchange for the Bolts? fourth-round pick (113th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. The 6-2, 288-pound Manumaleuna started 14 games for the Rams in 2005. He was utilized primarily as a blocker in St. Louis? offense, but caught 13 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. He?s a versatile player who has also lined up at fullback and H-back during his career.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman contacted the team this week about the possibility of beginning talks that could end with relocating to the glitzy gambling and entertainment mecca. The Chargers responded with a letter informing Goodman that their lease with San Diego prohibits them from talking with other cities until Jan. 1. Goodman said yesterday that he is not deterred. ?Las Vegas is the fastest-growing city in the U.S.,? the self-described ?happiest mayor in America? said in a phone interview. ?A new person moves here every six minutes. A new house is finished every 20 minutes. I'm thirsting for a major-league team. After January 1, I'll see whether the Chargers want to talk business.?

Cash-strapped San Diego doesn't have the money to help the Chargers build a new stadium, Mayor Jerry Sanders said, opening the door for Southern California's only NFL team to leave the city it has called home for 45 years. Sanders said he plans to ask the City Council to amend the Chargers' lease to allow the team to begin looking at sites elsewhere in San Diego County before the end of the year. If the team fails to find a new home in the county before Jan. 1, the Chargers would be free to negotiate a deal anywhere in the country. The Chargers can leave San Diego after the 2008 season if they pay off the approximately $60 million in bonds the city issued in 1997 to expanded Qualcomm Stadium. "I do not think it would be prudent or honest for me to say to taxpayers 'We can't resurface our roadways, but we can finance a stadium,"' the mayor said.

The Chargers have signed safety Andre Lott to a two-year contract. ?Andre has four years of valuable experience on the NFL level,? said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith. ?He?s healthy now and looking for a second chance. He gives us another veteran to compete in the secondary. I?m excited to see what he can do.?

San Diego Chargers backup linebacker Shaun Phillips was arrested after he scuffled with a patrol officer, police said. Phillips, 24, was booked into San Diego County jail on a charge of resisting arrest, said San Diego police spokesman David Cohen. Bail was set at $10,000. An officer patrolling San Diego's Gaslamp neighborhood spotted Phillips with a woman. According to the officer, Phillips had the woman in a headlock and she appeared to be in distress, Cohen said.

Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards, a Chula Vista native, will be moving on ? if not real soon then at least sooner than he would like. General Manager A.J. Smith verified when asked yesterday that he has notified the rest of the NFL (except AFC West foes) that Edwards is available for trade. Smith would not confirm what might pry Edwards away, but it is a good bet a first-day draft pick would accomplish it. ?If it's not attractive, nothing will be done,? Smith said. ?If it is, decisions will be made.?

The San Diego Chargers added another weapon to their offensive arsenal Wednesday afternoon by trading for former 49ers wide receiver Rashaun Woods. In exchange for the 6-2, 205 pound pass catcher, the Bolts sent cornerback Sammy Davis to San Francisco. Woods was a first round selection (31st overall) in the 2004 draft after breaking nearly every school and Big XII receiving record at Oklahoma State. In his four years in Stillwater, Woods caught 293 passes for 4,414 yards (15.1 avg.) and 42 touchdowns. The Oklahoma City native caught seven balls for 170 yards and a touchdown as a rookie. Woods spent the final 13 weeks of the 2005 season on injured reserve after undergoing an operation on his thumb last September.

The San Diego Chargers have re-signed wide receiver Eric Parker to a new five-year contract. Parker signed a three-year deal with the team in July 2004 and his contract was due to expire after the 2006 season. This new contract guarantees Parker will continue to wear the Lightning Bolts until 2010. ?Eric represents everything we want to see in a San Diego Charger,? said General Manager A.J. Smith. ?Though he?s still only 26 years old, Eric sets a great example for our other players. He leads by example. His work ethic is second-to-none. It?s a good feeling to know Eric Parker will be a Charger for the next five years.?
