Antonio Brown Hasn't Closed Door On Return To Steelers

Jan 28, 2019 8:52 AM

While a trade may seem likely, Antonio Brown hasn't closed the door on a return to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers haven't yet given Brown and his agent permission to seek a trade.

Even if he's eventually dealt, a move isn't likely soon. The Steelers would carry $21.1 million of Brown's salary in dead cap if they trade him before June 1.

Steelers Open Extension Talks With Ben Roethlisberger

Jan 23, 2019 6:48 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have opened contract negotiations with Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger turns 37 in March.

“We’ve already started talking to him and his representative about extending that contract,” Art Rooney II said. “I think Ben has some good years left. I’d still say he’s close to being in the prime of his career.”

Under Roethlisberger’s current deal, he would count $23.2 million against the salary cap for 2019.

“Now that we’re seeing quarterbacks around the league that are playing into their 40s,” Rooney said, “I’m not sure there’s any reason that Ben can’t play for several more years. We’re looking forward to that.”

Steelers Have No Immediate Plans To Extend Mike Tomlin

Jan 17, 2019 8:28 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a history of discussing extensions with their head coaches when they have two years left on their contract.

Mike Tomlin has two years left on his deal, but the Steelers aren't in a rush to extend him.

"Those are things we'll get to sort of later in the offseason, so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Art Rooney II said.

Rooney did, however, push back against speculation that Tomlin was on the hot seat after a disappointing season filled with drama.

"It's nonsense," the owner said. "We didn't achieve our goal of winning the division but we finished half a game out and had a lot of opportunities to get there."

Bruce Arians Sees Too Much 'Diva' In Antonio Brown

Jan 16, 2019 8:24 AM

Bruce Arians, who was the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers when Antonio Brown was a rookie, doesn't like what he's seeing in the wide receiver.

Arians has been hired as the new coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"There's too much miscommunication, too much ... diva," Arians said on The Adam Schefter Podcast. "I've heard so many stories -- I like Antonio -- he plays as hard as anybody on Sunday, and he practices hard. He's just gotta make better decisions off the field, be on time, do some of those little things."

Arians said Brown isn't the same person that entered the NFL in 2010.

"He was the hardest working," Arians said. "He and Emmanuel Sanders, boy they went after it because [Steelers head coach] Mike Tomlin used to tell them, 'Two dogs, one bone.' And at that time, we had Mike Wallace, Hines Ward -- I mean, we had a pretty good run for one of them to get on the field. By the end of the season, they were both winning for us to go to the Super Bowl."

Jerry Rice: Antonio Brown Wants To Play For 49ers 'Really Bad'

Jan 14, 2019 7:37 PM

Jerry Rice contends Antonio Brown wants to play for the San Francisco 49ers.

Brown had a FaceTime conversation with Rice on Sunday.

Rice was interviewed by a local Bay Area station on Monday.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He wants to come here really bad.

"He's talking about running the hill with me -- doing all that and just working out and just picking my brain. I don't know if it's going to happen because it's going to be up to [coach] Kyle Shanahan and also [general manager] John Lynch, but I'm all for it if they want him to come on board."

Art II: 'Hard To Envision' Antonio Brown Staying With Steelers In 2019

Jan 10, 2019 5:22 PM

Art Rooney II publicly said it is "hard to envision" Antonio Brown remaining with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019.

Brown's absence in Week 17 practices resulted in a benching for the season finale.

"There's not much we can do right now; we have time to make a decision," Rooney said. "We'll look at all the options. We're not going to release him, that's not on the table. But I will say all other options are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled and have him back on the team next year, we're a long way from thinking that can happen. We're not closing the door on anything at this point."

The Steelers couldn't trade Brown until March 13th. Brown's $2.5 million roster bonus due March 17 would incentivize the Steelers to deal him. The Steelers would absorb $21.12 million in 2019 dead money on the salary cap by trading Brown, but taking his $22.165 million cap charge off the books would offset that cost.

Rooney said in the interview that salary-cap implications would not "box us into anything."

The Denver Broncos will decide between Vic Fangio and Mike Munchak for their head coaching job.

Fangio is coming off an excellent season as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears.

Munchak has been offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2014. Munchak was 22-26 in his three seasons with the Tennessee Titans from 2011 to 2013, including a 9-7 finish in 2011.

Peter King 'Disgusted' By Antonio Brown Story, Changes All-Pro Vote

Jan 7, 2019 10:17 AM

Peter King changed his vote of Antonio Brown as one of the two wide receivers on his AP All-Pro ballot following the report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of Brown missing Week 17 due to practice issues instead of an injury.

King voted instead for Michael Thomas over Brown.

"The more I thought about it, the more disgusted I got," wrote King. "There might be some slightly contrarian evidence, but there’s not much debate that Brown petulantly missed multiple practices prior to a game with major playoff implications, a game he could have and almost certainly would have influenced. I could not in good conscience vote for a person who went AWOL for a game of such magnitude. So I erased Brown, typed in Thomas of the Saints, and re-filed my ballot to the AP."

Mike Tomlin Denies Report Of Antonio Brown Trade Request

Jan 2, 2019 1:08 PM

Mike Tomlin denied reports that Antonio Brown has requested to be traded.

Tomlin said Brown didn't play in Week 17 because the two had a "lack of communication" in the days leading up to the game.

Asked Wednesday if he thought Brown quit on the Steelers, Tomlin responded that "you can call it what you want to call it."

Brown hasn't commented publicly on the situation, but he did tweet a seemingly inspirational message Wednesday.
