Cam Heyward, NFL Reach Agreement On Eye Black Issue

Oct 21, 2015 11:50 AM

Cam Heyward and the NFL have reached agreement over his fines for wearing eye black honoring his late father, Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, reducing his fine with the stipulation he represent his father in other ways.

Heyward had a conference call with the league over the original fine of $5,787 for wearing the eye black during last week's Monday Night Football game against the San Diego Chargers.

Those totals are now significantly less, the source said.

Heyward displayed "IRON" and "HEAD" underneath his eyes, effectively violating the league's uniform policy.

Heyward took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to address the matter, writing that he had a "respectful exchange" with the league.

"I consider myself a team player and someone who puts others before myself, and I don't want to be a distraction to my teammates or the Steelers organization," Heyward wrote. "With that, I will not be writing on my eye black going forward anymore. I will be honoring my father in other ways on and off the field."

Heyward's camp pointed out to the league via conference call that Devon Still was not fined last year for wearing "Leah" and Strong" under his eyes during games, an honor to his daughter, Leah Still, in her fight with pediatric cancer.

Maurkice Pouncey Could Miss All Of 2016 Following 2nd Surgery

Oct 16, 2015 1:44 PM

Maurkice Pouncey could miss all of the 2015 season after undergoing a second surgery on his left fibula, according to a media report.

The surgery was necessary, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, because of an infection caused by a metal plate inserted during the first surgery.

The Steelers placed Pouncey on short-term injured reserve the week before the season started. The earliest that a healthy Pouncey could have played was Week 9.

If Pouncey misses the entire season, it would be his second full year lost since 2013, when he sat out after tearing an ACL.

Cameron Heyward Fined For Eye Black Tribute To Father

Oct 14, 2015 6:22 PM

The NFL fined Cameron Heyward for wearing eye black honoring his father, former NFL fullback Craig "Ironhead" Heyward against the Chargers.

Heyward's father battled cancer and died in May 2006. Heyward wore the words "Iron" and "Head" under his eyes, resulting in what a source says is a $5,787 fine.

"To lose a person like that due to cancer, for cancer awareness, I don't think it should be a big deal at all," Heyward said after Wednesday's practice.

NFL Blames Clock Operator, Side Judge For Time Error In PIT-SD Game

Oct 13, 2015 1:16 PM

The NFL has blamed an error by a clock operator, and the failure to correct it by on-field officials, for an unusual run-off of 18 seconds near the end of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 24-20 victory Monday night over the San Diego Chargers.

The performance of those responsible will be reviewed as per standard procedure, according to league spokesman Michael Signora.

The incident occurred after a touchback as the Steelers gained possession for their game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter. By NFL rule, the clock should not have started because the receiving team possessed the ball in the end zone without taking it onto the field of play.

The clock continued to run, however, and when the Steelers huddled, the clock showed 2:38 remaining instead of 2:56, as it should have.

Official game time is kept on the stadium scoreboard, which is operated by a league-hired local resident who usually has college football officiating experience.
