Steelers Won't Spend A Lot Of Money This Offseason

May 30, 2014 11:46 PM

Like Steelers' chairman Dan Rooney and Coach Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert acknowledges that a 10-6, division-winning year wasn?t all that bad. ?It was OK,? Colbert said of the season that ended with a 31-29 home playoff loss to Jacksonville. ?We were happy to finish 10-6. We were happy to win the division and make the playoffs. But we certainly aren?t satisfied. As coach said, we?ll never be satisfied until we win the Super Bowl.? Colbert expects plenty of change once the Steelers report to training camp. Even though the company line says that negotiations with Alan Faneca still aren?t completely dead, there?s little reason to believe the Steelers can match the lucrative offer he?ll get on the open market.

Former Steeler' Ernie Holmes Dies At 59

Dec 7, 2014 10:07 AM

Ernie Holmes, who won two Super Bowls as an anchor of Pittsburgh's famed "Steel Curtain" defense in the 1970s, died in a car crash. He was 59. Ernie Holmes is pictured in New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1975, as the Steelers prepared for Super Bowl IX against the Vikings. "This is the way Tarkenton will see me Sunday," Holmes said that day. Holmes was driving alone Thursday night when his car left the road and rolled several times near Lumberton, about 80 miles from Houston, a Texas Department of Public Safety dispatcher said Friday.

Steelers' WR Ward Has Knee Surgery

Oct 20, 2014 9:14 PM

Steelers' wide receiver Hines Ward underwent surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his right knee and will need about six weeks of recovery time before beginning offseason workouts. The surgery was done Wednesday but was not disclosed until Coach Mike Tomlin's season-ending news conference Thursday. Ward missed three games this season because of the injury, including the Dec. 30 game at Baltimore. He returned to make a game-high 10 catches for 135 yards in the Steelers' 31-29 AFC playoff loss to Jacksonville on Saturday. Until this season, Ward had missed only three games due to injuries during his 10-season NFL career. Ward has a team record 719 career catches.

Roethlisberger Will Seek Contract Extension

Feb 15, 2014 9:20 PM

The Steelers face a busy offseason on their labor front, starting with the biggest of them all, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger has two years left on his contract precisely the time when the Steelers extended their two previous starting quarterbacks Tommy Maddox and Kordell Stewart. The quarterback and his agent Ryan Tollner had hoped to negotiate an extension a year ago but were told at the time the Steelers wanted to wait until 2008. Talks are not likely to start immediately, but the sides likely will at least schedule some times for them to begin. Roethlisberger is due a roster bonus of $2.95 million early in March. That number could be wrapped into a signing bonus and spread out for salary cap purposes if a contract is signed before then. If not, it will count as hard numbers against their 2008 salary cap although that is not seen as an impediment to a long-term extension. "We'll see; we'll wait until they feel right," Tollner said yesterday of the timetable for negotiations. "I'm optimistic. Ben wants to be in Pittsburgh long term."

Big Ben Takes Blame For Steelers' Loss

Jul 17, 2014 11:31 AM

A pass rush made all the more ferocious by numerous breakdowns along the Steelers' offensive line forced Ben Roethlisberger to step up into the pocket time and time again Saturday night. The quarterback stepped up one more time after the Steelers' numbing 31-29 loss to the Jaguars in an AFC wild-card game at Heinz Field. "I'm ashamed of the way I played," Roethlisberger said. "I told the guys 'I apologize,' and it's unfortunate it had to end this way." The Steelers wiped out an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter at a frenzied Heinz Field only to watch the Jaguars pull out the victory after the less-celebrated quarterback in the game David Garrard made the biggest play in the wild, back-and-forth affair. "I take the heat for that," said Roethlisberger, who set playoff career highs for passing yards (337) and completions (29) but also tied his postseason high with the three interceptions. He lost a fumble as well. "I dug us a hole. We got out of the hole a little deep, but it was too deep."

Jags' Scobee Kicks FG To Beat Steelers

Oct 31, 2014 12:42 PM

The past means nothing to the Jaguars in Pittsburgh, and neither does a frantic Steelers' fourth-quarter rally. The Jaguars overcame both obstacles there for the second time in three weeks, and next up might be another date with history. Josh Scobee saved the game by kicking a 25-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining, and the Jaguars came back after squandering an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter to beat the Steelers 31-29 on Saturday night in an AFC wild-card game that was wild in every sense of the word.

Polamalu Practices, Expected To Play Against Jags

May 24, 2014 7:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers' safety Troy Polamalu practiced Friday and is expected to play in Saturday's AFC wild-card game against the Jaguars. Polamalu, who hasn't practiced in weeks, missed four of Pittsburgh's final six regular-season games with a sprained knee. He officially was listed as questionable on the team's injury report Friday. "He looked good enough today to be a game-time decision," Steelers' Coach Mike Tomlin said after practice, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I know he feels well, but we'll see." Polamalu injured the knee Nov. 18 against the Jets.

Taylor Says Heinz Field Is Lawsuit Waiting To Happen

Oct 31, 2014 6:09 AM

Fred Taylor isn't worried as much about the Pittsburgh Steelers' home-field advantage as he is their bad field. Taylor, the Jaguars' star running back, chided the Steelers on Tuesday for their substandard grass field. He also suggested they spend $1 million on artificial turf to improve one of the NFL's worst playing surfaces. The Jaguars play an AFC wild-card game in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, their second visit there in less than a month. "That field is terrible," Taylor said in a conference call with Pittsburgh reporters. "That's a lawsuit pending. That's ridiculous." Taylor's comments were unexpected only because he ran for 147 yards and the winning touchdown on that snow-covered, mushy field during Jacksonville's 29-22 victory in Pittsburgh on Dec. 16.
