Cowher Meets With Holmes

May 18, 2014 12:53 AM

Steelers coach Bill Cowher had his long-awaited conversation Saturday night with rookie receiver Santonio Holmes. "We had a good talk," Cowher said yesterday. "He's got a lot of work to do but he's committed to getting caught up to where he will feel comfortable." Holmes has to make up ground off and on the field because of two arrests in May and June, and after he missed most of the Steelers' spring drills because his Ohio State classes were still in session. Hines Ward predicted Holmes will do so off the field as well. The Super Bowl MVP spent the week leading to training camp with Holmes. They worked out together at the Steelers' UPMC complex and ate dinner together. "I hung out with him," Ward said. "He's a good kid. The misconception of what's going on off the field, that's not really relevant to us. We understand the situation, we really know kind of what's going on with everything."

Fans Cheer For Big Ben

They screamed in delight, yelled out his name, asked him to slow down so they could snap more pictures. Ben Roethlisberger heard the ruckus, realized he was the cause of it, and could only smile at the attention. And all he was doing midway through the Steelers' first training camp practice Sunday was changing his jersey. "They were loud, and they were cheering for any little thing that happened," coach Bill Cowher said of the 10,000-plus fans watching a practice that couldn't have been more routine, with a few passing and blocking drills and not much else.

Extension For Cowher Uncertain

Apr 14, 2014 1:10 PM

The Steelers aren't certain they'll agree on an extension of coach Bill Cowher's contract prior to the start of training camp. Or if Cowher is interested in extending his deal beyond the two years it has remaining. "I don't know," Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said Tuesday. "That's one thing we have to look at, and he does, too, just what is the best thing." The Steelers have traditionally extended Cowher's contract two years prior to it expiring.

No Ads For Helmets

Jun 6, 2014 12:55 PM

Ben Roethlisberger doesn't plan on doing public safety announcements for motorcycle or helmet safety following his accident last month. "I don't think that's my place," the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback said in a taped interview aired July 14 on ABC's Good Morning America. "Some people feel that, you know, I probably should be doing that and being a big advocate for that," Roethlisberger said from Los Angeles. "But for me, I'm going to let people make their own decisions ... So I don't think you'll see me doing any kind of billboards or advertisements."

Swann Is Struggling In Political Rookie Season

Feb 15, 2014 3:32 AM

Lynn Swann was known on the football field for making his most spectacular catches with the game on the line. It won him four Super Bowls with the Steelers, a spot in the Hall of Fame, and a celebrity that has catapulted him to the Republican nomination for governor. But in his rookie season in politics, the smooth-talking Swann often has failed to find his footing, struggling to articulate his vision beyond the bumper-sticker shorthand of tax cuts, spending caps and government reform.
