49ers Not Interested In Nick Foles, Colin Kaepernick

Sep 30, 2018 12:15 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are comfortable with starting C.J. Beathard at quarterback and aren't interested in acquiring a high profile quarterback such as Nick Foles or Colin Kaepernick.

Some within the NFL are hoping the 49ers would trade for Foles as they have five prime-time games on their schedule.

Some fans of the 49ers have lobbied the team to sign Kaepernick.

One team source said, they think Beathard will "be productive."

The 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season due to a torn ACL.

Jay Ajayi Plans To Play Despite Fractured Back

Sep 28, 2018 8:04 AM

Jay Ajayi has a small fracture in his back, but plans to play when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

"You just have to roll with it until it heals on its own," he said. "You just have to protect it."

Ajayi injured his back in the first quarter of Philadelphia's Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He sat out last week's victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

The running back will be a free agent after the season.

Browns Deny Stealing 'Philly Special' Play From Eagles

Sep 21, 2018 9:24 AM

Hue Jackson says he didn't take Thursday's night successful two-point conversion play from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cleveland Browns momentarily tied their game with the New York Jets with a two-point conversion that resembled the "Philly Special" the Eagles used in Super Bowl LII and again in Week 1 of this season.

Baker Mayfield played the role of Nick Foles, catching a pass in the end zone.

"We did not steal that from them," Jackson said after Cleveland broke their losing streak. "Please. I know everybody wants to think that. We have had that in our back pocket for a while. Go check my tricks from before, and go check [offensive coordinator Todd Haley's] tricks from before. We all have them. It is just when you pull them out and use them. That is what that is."

Teams used the play before the Eagles, but they've become associated with the play since it was used on an international stage.

Eagles Sign Jordan Matthews

Sep 19, 2018 10:30 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Jordan Matthews.

The Eagles have had depth issues at wide receiver, placing Mike Wallace on injured reserve this week.

Matthews was traded to the Buffalo Bills before the start of last season and then went to the New England Patriots.

Matthews was valued in the locker room during his first stint with the Eagles and is a close friend of quarterback Carson Wentz.

Carson Wentz will start for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3 as he returns from his knee injury.

Nick Foles started the first two weeks of the season.

“He’s going to be prepared mentally, now it’s a matter of the physical part taking over," said Doug Pederson. "In my mind, he’s cleared, he’s cleared. No need to hold back."

Richard Sherman, Michael Bennett Nearly Fought Over Russell Wilson

Sep 7, 2018 1:32 PM

Following a loss to the Green Bay Packers in 2016, Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett nearly had a physical confrontation over Russell Wilson.

Wilson threw five interceptions against a mediocre Green Bay defense.

Sherman proposed confronting Wilson in a private setting to ask what the issue was as they would routinely do with other players.

“That was a common thing to do, because often it was some outside factor affecting guys, family stuff, and you’d work through that,” one former player says.

Bennett took issue with Sherman's stance, reminding him that the Seahawks only had one quarterback.

The two needed to be separated.

Eagles-Falcons Has 13.4 Overnight Rating, Continuing Downward Trend

Sep 7, 2018 10:03 AM

The NFL's Kickoff game between the Eagles and Falcons had an overnight rating of 13.4, which is down from last year's 14.6.

2017: Chiefs/Pats: 14.6
2016:
Panthers/Broncos: 16.5
2015: Steelers/Pats: 17.7
2014: Packers/Seahawks: 16.8
2013: Ravens/Broncos: 16.2

The 14.6 rating still beat Game 1 of The Finals, which had a 12.4 overnight rating. Game 7 of the 2017 World Series had a 15.8 rating, but the other games were 12.6 or lower.

Eagles Use Patriots' Verision Of 'Philly Special' Against Falcons

Sep 7, 2018 8:38 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles went to a familiar trick play to bring life to their offense in Thursday's season opening win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Eagles had just 68 total yards in the first half as Nick Foles averaged 3.6 yards per pass attempt.

In the third quarter, Doug Pederson called a variation of the "Philly Special" that became the highlight of the team's Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots in February. It was actually the same play the Patriots ran against the Eagles, but in Super Bowl LII a pass to Tom Brady fell incomplete.

"I mean, it's a good play," Foles said. "This league, there's a lot of great plays, there's a lot of great minds, so when you see something like that, that's unique and it works well, you try to execute it like they do."

Against the Falcons, Corey Clement took the snap, flipped the ball to Nelson Agholor on a reverse and the receiver lofted a throw to Foles that gained 15 yards. It was the longest play of the night for the Eagles at that point.

Foles said they had run that play only once in practice. Agholor was a backup quarterback in high school but doesn't have much in-game throwing experience. Trey Burton, now with the Chicago Bears, threw the pass on the original play.
